light upgrades

Hi,

 

I want to hop up a little my 350.

It's a L65, 350 2 bolts main, 2 barrels (and yes you can do burnouts ).

I want to change the 2 barrels carb for a 4 barrels. Also engine needs new intake.

 

According to you what is the best setup ? Which carb & intake would you choose to keep a good mileage, good torque between idle and 5000 rpm ?

 

Holley or Edelbrock carb ? Air-gap style intake ?

I would recommend an Edelbrock Performer 600 cfm carburetor (w/electric choke) and Edelbrock Performer intake (Air-Gap not necessary, but they do look cool) - JMO.

 

NOTE: If you do upgrade to a 4-bbl you will need to upgrade your exhaust as well (headers, dual exhaust).

Yes, headers are on my todo list. I have installed dual exhaust last summer

 

Does 1406 carbs performs better than Holley 4160 ?

Last question... Is it worse the penny replacing the camshaft ?

Hi Romain,

 

Selecting the proper camshaft is extremely important - all your other choices are affected (carburetor, manifold, etc.) by your cam selection. If you're going to change cams, and given that you want good gas mileage and torque, I'd go with a cam and lifter kit from (for example) Edelbrock's Performer-Plus series of camshafts.

Perhaps others can chime in here, but when selecting a cam, it's best to talk to an expert (i.e. call the manufacturer for advice).

 

Holley or Edelbrock? Personally, I like the looks of Holley carbs and am used to working on them. Either way, don't go too big. I've used both - either one should work fine.

I am looking for 64cc aluminium heads.

 

Here the camshaft I want 224/232 duration .473/.486 lift.

 

What do you think about this ?

Unless you are going racing - the GM OE 250hp/300hp camshaft is about as good as it gets for street car in a heavy Monte....  you can get crazy and go big on a cam, but 9x out of 10, guys wind up over camming and engine just because the "tech support" guys made a suggestion.   

 

For about 10 years, I swapped 8 different cams in the SBC that was in my 69 Camaro - trying to improve on the factory's hi-po cam... in every instance - the GM grind was superior.  (when using anything other than racing heads/intake/exhaust etc.)    I know I sound like an old curmudgeon - but really, i've been down this road a dozen times with people... and in every instance - without fail - a factory grind will ofter the best all around performance, reliability, ease of maintenance, and lastly - least amount of wear on the valve train.

 

GM engineers knew what they were doing.

 

NOW - aftermarket heads, intake, exhaust, converter, gearing?  then sure you can go bigger - but you might not like the low end sponginess of a big [censored] heavy Monte whose engine doesn't wake up until 2500 rpm.

I'm going to be running a similar combo in a 355 I'm building for my daily car. 64cc chambers with flat top pistons will be around 9.5-10.5 static compression depending on the head gasket used. Need more info on the cam, is it a roller or flat tappet? I will be running a dirt cheap summit racing #1105 flat tappet cam 224/234  duration @ .050. This combo will probably need a higher stall converter and/or gears to work well in a heavy car.
