What did you do to your Monte Carlo today?

Recommended Posts

Went for drive. Not to far just for about 30 minutes. It was therapeutic to get behind the wheel and hear the low rumble of the pipes again! It's been about 40 days since I had it out.

Went to a car show in Garfield Park on INDY's near south side. It was for the Marion County Veterans Assoc. Kind of different in that we got a real good meal out of it but the awards were over sized dash plaques. I guess that gives them more money for their programs. Still a top 25 is great over 85 cars in attendance. Two 72 Monte's and both of us got Plaques. I have talked to him about joining before and some more today. I cannot remember Bob's last name but he has brought the car a longs ways in the last two years.

They are aluminum. We are still trying to mold them to fit. After we get them close we will weld a stud to it and use some 3M double sided tape. Which was someone else's idea. I am just following his lead.

I am in the process of making a mold of the tail light extension so I can get the curve as perfect as I can, then I can mold the aluminum. Does any have or can they get the measurement of the stud? I would like to get these acurate.

Made the call today to transfer to storage insurance for 6 or so months. :(

Sad day.

This weekend we will work on getting the Monte and firebird winterized for the hibernation.

Started the winter mods. Removed wiper motor and brake booster to replace them. I also scuffed and painted the fire wall since this stuff was out of the way. Looks a little better. The old wiper motor and booster have to be original since they look like have seen better days.post-1188-0-10019000-1477434329_thumb.jpg

Here's a pic of the new versus old wiper motor.post-1188-0-16257900-1477434486_thumb.jpg

I ordered a chrome 9" booster to replace this.post-1188-0-45997900-1477435230_thumb.jpg

Installed a set of air lift air bags on the rear to get more rake and got almost 2" of extra clearance with the bags full at 35 psi. Before and after pic below

Coby, you did get a significant lift out of those air lift bags at 35 psi but is the ride firmness acceptable to you?  Maybe it is or maybe you carry heavy trunk loads or rear passengers. If not, you can probably back off on the pressure and still get some noticeable lift of the rear as the relationship seems not to be directly linear.

I initially ran mine at 25 psi to get more rake but I soon grew tired of the very firm ride.  I dropped mine to 15 psi and installed a Hellwig rear sway bar which helped with launch and cornering but allowed a more moderate lift and ride comfort level. As you know, it's easy to play around with it by simply adjusting the air pressure.

Dennis, you're right at 35 psi the ride is much too firm, if I drive over a curb my body almost bounces off the seat but I do really like the look of the extra 2" on the rear. Also, I noticed before and after I the install that my passenger side is almost 1" lower than the driver side so I'm hoping I can manipulate the bags to level things out. I haven't had the chance to play around with the pressure yet as I basically did the install, took pictures/measurements, then left for work and haven't got back to it yet. Darren installed a rear sway bar on the car prior to me buying it from him. Thanks for the input! It's almost time to put the car in storage for the winter but I think I'll try 15 psi as you mentioned and see how I like it.

Looks good Rodney. I am sure you are anxious to see primer on the repair.

rob

Thanks and Yes Rob! I'll be happy with the whole car in primer. This is how it looked with everything removed
