i just pulled a 72, 454, 400 turbo, 3.36 posi, out of a barn in kentucky, all the numbers match, the heads are stamped 1/7/71, the block is 1/8/71, the block is also stamped HI PERF, can anyone tell how rare this car is, it has been in the barn for 13yrs until i pulled it out an brought it to michigan.

A factory 454 72 Custom is VERY rare. GM does not have the info on how many Customs were made but it has been estimated by some here at 1,200 or so with maybe 10% of those being 454s. It is only an estimate but even without knowing the actual numbers it is a rare car. What colour is it?

Does your VIN have a "W" in it? That verifies it was born with a 454.

A Canadian built 454 Custom would be the holy grail of 72 Montes. This means you can get GM Canada to send you the information package which tells all the original factory options of the car among other information. Canadian built 72 Customs also had the "Z03" stamped on the cowl tag.

I agree rare indeed! Put up some pics when possible. Mine is also a custom. Rare but not nearly as rare as a w code custom. I think my factory cruise is more rare than the custom feature lol!

Hi Alan, here's a link to the GM Canada Vintage Vehicle Services website so you can order the full documentation package for your rare Oshawa built 72.

Please tell Frank and George that Larry Demings from Oshawa This Week Newspaper says hello. :)

Cheers,

In your post you did not say it is a "Custom" or at least I did not see it posted that it is a Custom.  Is it?  You have to love barn finds.  How about posting some pictures because WE LOVE PICTURES!!!!!

Roger I have been thru Plainfield many times. My brother Joe used to live in Yorkville but moved to Sandwich about 5 years ago and we have not been up as much since the move.

Does anyone know how many 72 customs are left out there, I hear GM didn't make many.

There is no way of knowing because when registering them the fact they are a Custom, SS, vinyl top, two-tone, etc., isn't usually stated on the registration.

GM Canada would likely be able to tell you how many 72 Customs with 454s were built in Canada. Sometimes even narrow it down to the colour. For example, my GM Canada info package stated that 148 1971 SS Montes were built in Canada and only 65 for the Canadian market. I saw another package for a member's triple black 71 SS that said only 6 built in that combination in Canada (triple black 71 SS). Unfortunately GM US does not have that data.

I love the fact that my 71 SS was Canadian built...  Makes all my motor head friends jealous that Z20 is stamped right on the cowl tag where everyone can see it...  lol

I would like to know the reason behind it myself.  Never heard of that before.  Maybe you call DMV and have them explain it.

Ok, i got the build package back from vintage vehicle services, the 72 is a custom, there was 17,734  monte's produced for US sale from oshawa, 138 with LS5, 908 with Z03, 503 with U14, mine has all these codes, i have 2 pages with all the options the car has, it was built oct 8, 71, shipped oct 15, 71 to Universal Chevrolet, Louisville KY.

Using that information:

0.8% of the Montes had the 454 (this seems very low)

5.1% of the Montes had the Custom package

If we use the full production number (180,819) with those same statistics, we could "estimate" the total 454s to be 1,407 and the total customs to be 9,258. If only 5.12% of the 454 cars were Customs, then that would only 72 (oh, the irony). I would say round up to 100 or so since it might be more likely that people ordered the 454 if they ordered the custom package. All estimates of course but seems reasonable based on the Canadian statistics.
