"Stuck" gas gauge

Guest

Recommended Posts

Maybe someone can offer some advise.

The gas gauge on my 72 Monte will not

read over 1/3 tank, even when full.

If I go below 1/3 tank, the gauge will go lower.

Any ideas?

Check the service manual and get your ohm meter. Check the sending unit with a meter. It should have specific readings that are necessary to properly operate that gauge. Just tap into the sending unit line, tan wire I believe. Take a reading at the level of gas you have now. Then either siphon on some gas or add some gas and see the change. Sending units are cheap and easier to change than the gauge.

Buy you sending unit if needed at GM. They are still available.

However it could be the gauge????

its not the gauge its the sender, the wire windings on the resistor are broken, wear and tear basically you have a break in the resistor 1/3 of the way along and the gauge is only responding to that part for information. prolley caused by years of the tank only being filled to a 1/3, then a ridge developes in the copper wire and then when the car changes hands and someone else starts filling the tank beyond a 1/3 full on a regular basis, so the contact/lever is forced over the ridge and consequently cuts thru the resistor windings, pound to a penny thats the problem smile.gif

unfortunatly, youve gotta pull the sender from the gas tank to see the damage, the gauge is already a kinda makeshift ohm-meter.....

good luck

that i cannot tell you, ive never had a monte gas tank out b4 so i dont know the position of the sender, but its always on the top. maybe someone whose seen a gas tank on the floor can answer that question. any takers? smile.gif

my previous experience with this problem was with a VW panel van, where the quickest vway was to cut a flap thru the rear floor hump and reach thru...

good luck

The sending unit goes in the top of the tank. You need to remove the tank to take it out. Empty the tank as much as you can before taking it off. Less weight to fight with. There are two straps to unbolt and two electrical connections to take off. The power lead just plugs onto the sending unit. The ground screws to the body. Since you have a 72, there will be four hoses to disconnect at the front of the tank. You will need to have the car on a hoist, ramps, or jack stands to do this. When everything is free, move the tank toward the front of the car until the filler neck clears the frame. Then just take it out the back. A large metal ring holds the unit in. It needs to be turned counter clockwise (left) to come loose. There will be gas in the tank, so be very careful.
