overdrive
My 70 SS came to me with no inspection cover. I want to order one, but need to know if it should be steel or plastic. Dan
LostnFound
Hi Dan, Others in the club would know better than I but my 71SS has a steel one on it. Check this one out.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-GM-Turbo-400-Inspection-Cover-Nova-Camaro-Chevelle-Impala-RS-SS-Z28-/221818349987
Sam (Bones)
steel for our montes
71MonteCarloMD
Does that means BB only have steel while SB have plastic?
Sam (Bones)
no, the plastic ones showed up later, being a big block or small block has nothing to do with it
overdrive
Thanks guys. Our 71 has steel, but I wanted to ask to be sure. Dan
71MonteCarloMD
Hmm my 71 with SB has plastic as I will need to replace one day. What is stock replacement, steel or plastic?

sredmyer
I know this is an old thread but it looks like the right place for this question. Does anyone know of a source for the correct bolts for the inspection cover on the turbo 400 in an SS454
1970mcss
Chevrolet Parts book shows: All All (454) .............................................. 3 8 1 7 0 0 6 A.R. .12 BOLT, w/washer (1/4"— 20 x 7/16" ) ................... I would think hardened bolts
sredmyer
Yeah, I thought they were 1/4-20 as well but a 1/4-20 bolt is too small in all of the holes in mine. If it were just one of the holes I would think it was just worn out...but all of them? Also, the 1/4-20 bolt is not just loose (like the threads were gone) but entirely too loose. MC1of80
Do you know if you have the original transmission? Sounds like you possibly have a 4x4 case that was built for a car. Are the holes threaded? If so, you do. The 4x4 cases had thick, like the case, aluminum inspection covers bolted to them. Hope this helps. sredmyer
Well the bell house may be different but the trans itself is numbers matching to my VIN. I will have to take a closer look when I can get it back on the lift.
MC1of80
Since the Trans is numbers matching, it obviously is not a 4x4 case. I would like to hear what you find.
