Signature picture size

Recommended Posts

I have this posted in the Comments/Suggestions area, but I know everyone does not visit that area, so here it is in this section also. smile.gif

Hi everyone, I need to address the issue about the size of signature pictures. We are getting some really big pictures in them lately, and that is not all to fair to our members who use slower connections, plus it uses up bandwidth. So we would like to make a size limit on signature pictures of 250x175 pixels.

Pictures that are a part of a posting is another situation because most of the time those are used to show detail on a specific subject. So basically those are exempt, but please dont have them obnoxiously huge.

We do hope that everyone understands why we are requesting this, we want to make Http://www.firstgenmc.com a pleasure for everyone to enjoy.

Thank You,

Pete

Pete, How about if the image is reduced in size to 17kb regardless of pixel size? Computer Graphics was my job for a few years and I can manipulate an image to look quite good and still keep it at less than 25 kb. Most images of the pixel resoultion you stated are at least 25kb in size. If not, I understand, just thought I'd ask since the issue is bandwidth, not resolution.

Also, No need for apologies for the flame war Pixtar has started in the Engine discussion thread. I know how that goes, I run several message boards myself. Many thanks for all the help and info I have received here so far. I will be definetly be joining next paycheck.

Great idea Charlie! I just don't know if everyone out here knows how to do that though. Would this also help in the loading aspect for dialup users? That is also a huge part. Perhaps a max kb of 50kb and 250x175 pixel size members choice? Kevin, Lucky, Joe, and all other officers...what do you guys think?

If your goal is to reduce load times for pages and reduce bandwidth usage, then limiting image size in kb (kilobytes) would definetly be the more prudent target. Pixel dimensions are an indication of image size(viewable dimensions), but the file size still can vary greatly depending on the resolution of the image (color depth). A reduction in bandwidth consumption, and therfore faster page load times for dialup users, would be better accomplished by limiting filesize (kb). Also, JPG filetypes (files that end in a JPG extension are usually the smaller image types (vs. BMP or most other formats).

Just my two cents worth, I'm certainly not trying to set any board policy here!

Please correct me if I'm wrong but if you can put a pic in a sig then it must be on a server somewhere right. Therefore why can't members just put a smaller thumbnail size pic in there sig and link it to their server pic or website.

I was creating my sig today and then read Pete's thoughts and so I did just this. My pic is small but still big enough about the same as Pete's and is less than 10kb, 7.7 to be exact.

Also I have no problems with reducing the image quality and therefore the kb's of the image as knighttime007 mentioned.

Maybe if we only post pictures of primered or faded cars, then we wouldn't have such a "color depth" problem as we do with those shiny clear-coated cars. I use one of those "once-a-year no buffing" car finishes, and forgot to do it the last couple of times. Even in real-life, my car has pretty low resolution.

Yes, the images in a Signature must be stored on a server external to FGMC. You are correct, a thumbnail is a just a reduction in the dimensions (height and width) of a larger image, resulting in an image of smaller file size. The file size of an image can also be reduced without altering the dimensions of the image. This method reduces the number of colors contained in the image. Dimensionally larger images can retain their visual size, and still be reduced in file size. There is a sacrafice of clarity when reducing colors depth as overdoing it results in a grainy and somewhat fuzzy appearance. Originally, the picture of my Monte is 289kb, but by reduction of resolution (colors), I have compressed it to 17kb.

As I am not a computer expert and it took me over a week to get my picture to work when I posted a message, I would like to make mine smaller to help out.

If any of you can do this for me I don't mind you making it smaller. I just don't want to mess it up and go back to square one and start over trying to post it.

If it helps the club out I am all for it.

Thanks, Jack

I think the pictures should have a maximum width such that the message board is not wider than the screen (no offense Charlie smile.gif). The messages are hard to read when you have to go back and forth. That's my 2 cents. I also wanted to ask if mine is an OK size. Let me know. Thanx.

Here is a best practice that I use for a while already:

On each topic, I attach the signature only on ONE post. If I post another time on this topic, then without signature...

No offense taken Canuck. It takes a WHOLE lot to offend me! I totally agree that any web page should not have to be horizontally scrolled to be viewed. The only way to assure that won't happen is to limit all page development to 640x480. Most people run their screen resolution at 800x600, although 1024x768 is becoming more of the standard in developers coding. I've resized my image to hopefully not cause anymore horizontal scrolling. If it does still cause any problem, please let me know. I think Andreas has a great idea too ... only use a signature once per thread. Now that I have deviated from the discussion of Monte's toward computer stuff (too much like my 9-5 duties!), I'll try to return to why I started visiting FGMCC, Monte Talk! Not to say I don't mind throwing in my two cents about computer stuff as they do provide quite a nice living for my family...

Thanks all,

Charlie

I'm not trying to be mean here, but I've noticed that on several other message boards, that the members just post a link to their pics in their signatures, that way it doesn't take up alot of needed space.

If I wanted to see someones car I wouldn't mind having to click on one additional link. If you do something to your car that you would like everyone else to see, just post a message, and say, look what I've done now! and include it in a link to the pics. Problem solved.

just my opinion.

Posting links-only is common practice on large boards, images do consume too much bandwidth for dialup connections. Personally, I kind of like seeing a picture in the message, as I liken it to putting a face to a name. But hey, I'm just weird like that!

If we all keep the pictures as small as the one Pete uses, we should be OK. Also it does not realy matter how many times it is on the same post, because your browser caches it the first time it loads the picture and does not download it again on the same page. Just my 2 cents smile.gif

Ian has a good point here about the browser caches.

First Greg you need to have your pics on a web page/server. If that's done check out this link to FGMCC faq. It has info on posting pics.
