Charlie72
Long time since I have been on the board. Currently helping a friend solve an issue. 700r4 installed in a 72 monte with column shift. 1) column shift indicator? Cannot seem to locate one that allows for Park R N OD 321 2) I recall a long time ago the shift linkage from column shift (former TH350) to a 700r4 had to be modified or parts used off a late model with 700r4. Leghome
I know the Shift Works in PA. makes a kit for the floor shift conversion from 350 to 700r4. Do not know of any column shift conversion kits but there are a whole lot things I do not know according to my wife Glendia.
Charlie72
Shiftworks does not have it. They stop 1969. It is longer than the space available.
Sam (Bones)
I haven't heard of a column shift conversion for a 200/700 4R either
monte70car
One thing you can do is loosen up the linkage and go through the gears with the engine off and it will show you where OD will be at between N and 3rd.
Grease
take a look at the shift cross shaft from a Caprice or G body Monte that came with a 700R4. It has a longer offset where the down rod from the column connects. If you cant install the later cross shaft(I think it will swap in) , modify the one you have . The longer offset from the cross shaft slows the rotational movement which is needed because of the extra detent position in the 200/700 trans. Charlie72
Thanks everyone. I could not locate any more information on column shift conversion. I had recalled using a late model shift linkage. Thank you for confirming that it is something consider if the linkage isn't quite right. I'll post a pic later this week of the car in its current state. It's coming along slowly. Charlie
Charlie72
I sold my 72 monte years ago. It ended up in Tennessee and last i heard about it was years ago when it was at good guys show and got its pic in good guys mag. Picked up a 70 monte with halo top. I hate modifying complete cars but since this one was just a shell, frame, 12 bolt I don't feel to bad about modifying it. Trying to figure out what to do with it. Lots of parts for it just no time.
