Cruise Control repaired again

If anyone else has factory cruise control and it stops working, this may help.

I added a used A/C Delco Cruise control unit to my Monte about 13 years ago. The guy said it was for a Monte and it does fit and work (most of the time). Over the past 13 years or so it stops working after 2 to 3 summers of driving usually first time out in the spring. What I have found is slight carbon deposits or dirt get inside the unit, it sticks and won't engage. I remove it, dissemble and clean it with Alcohol, (DO NOT LUBE) re-assemble and it works.

If mine dont work Ill give it a try, I usually hear that the stators in the middle of the controllers like to fall apart after many years of rotation

My cruise isn't working and I'm wondering were to start to repair it. It has a Delco cruise system on it that was added on by the dealer at time of delivery due to factory issues at the time. It has a push button added to the bottom of the dash to set it. Should I start by chasing sparks or cleaning it.

Make sure the speedometer is working.

Check all vacuum hoses, wires and the cable to the carb. The switch to shut it off on the brake peddle (I think it also is the brake light switch) could be bad as well as the vacuum release valve also on brake peddle.

As mentioned in the above post, they do tend to fall apart inside. My spare part unit was one that did explode.

Very sensitive spring inside like a speedometer along with a switch that prevents engagement below about 25 MPH. There is a small air filter on the unit and it could be missing or so dirty the air won't flow.

My switch is on the turn sig lever and the small wires tend to break if you have a tilt wheel.

I have seen some units that use a mercury switch that shuts off the unit if the car rolls over. If it's bent down, it won't work.
