Advice on New Tires

Hello All,

I was looking into getting new tires for the Monte because the current tires are fairly old.  They were put on the car over ten years ago, however over the past ten years the car has been driven less than 1000 miles.  When I went to Belle Tire a few days ago, the tires were inspected and the technicians told me there was no need  to get new tires.  I was surprised by what the people at Belle Tire had to say and was hoping I could get some input from some members.  While the exterior of the tires look ok, have the interior of the tires degraded to the point where leaving the tires on makes the car unsafe to drive? Please let me know.

Thanks,

Conrad

It's hard for many people (myself included) to replace a tire that looks almost new...but a 10+ year old tire seems to be the magic number on any Google search as to when the the tire will start to fail no matter how perfect it looks.

At the very least stick your finger nail in the tread and compare that to a new tire and you will get an idea as to what is happening that your eye can not see...the old tire is noticeably harder. A new tire will be soft and you can imagine how that alone will translate in your ride. Rubber breaks down that is a fact...not too long ago someone from this sight said they had original 45 year old tires on their car and they were perfectly fine to drive on the highway and they worked in the tire industry their whole life. Of course I had to disagree and say they would have a blowout when they least expected it and I was glad I lived in a different state so I knew at the very least I would not be the poor person next to them on the highway when it happens. :D

We inherited a 2000 Olds Aurora in 2010 after my father in-law passed. The car only had 12,000 miles on it. The car was garage kept and he was meticulous about car care. Changed the oil every 3 months whether it had 30 miles or 1000 miles. The tires looked great on the outside but had started to weather check on the inside. I replaced them because we did not need to have a problem when on the road harming us or some other person who might have been near when a tire blew or other problem arose.

From what I've seen a tire that is old and hasn't been used much is less safe than a tire that is older and has been used... Kevin's caddy station wagon had a tread separation and the tires still looked new, tread separated, and flew off, Luckily it held air enough to get another tire. The road huggers on my wagon areally probably at least 12 years old but getting low on tread anyway, still smooth actually but always seen use. But another secret is they quit using real rubber in tires so many years ago.. so the tires made before they quit are better than the ones being made now, probably why these road huggers have lasted so well.

I have experience with a 40 year old original spare tire that looks brand-new it went crazy on me one day on that orange 402 car I had in high school. It lasted 30 miles. Lol
