MC1970U
I need to address the dim headlights on the Monte Carlo. I have read all the headlight topics in our forum but most are pretty old and wanted to know what the current thoughts are. I have some halogens in there now but they are pretty old and I have no idea how well they are working. Just want to brighten things up as much as possible legally. I was thinking about the setup Doug did in this thread http://www.firstgenmc.com/forums/index.php?/topic/14184-headlights-stock-replacement/?hl=headlights "The bulb that he used is Flosser Head Light Fog bulb 9003/hb2/h4 . They are 145 watt high beam/100 watts low beam halogen bulbs." Can that bulb be legal? It looks like it should be as some cars are manufactured with those bulbs. Also interested in thoughts on LED conversions like this EBay item number 122105974423 Thanks, s
stangeba
Many (many) years ago I switched from the standard OEM headlights to new modern halogen bulbs! It helped. One of the easiest upgrades I have ever done! :-) Bruce
MC1970U
Bruce, Like I said I have halogens in there right now but there pretty old and I don't know what wattage they are. Did you have to run relays? When I changed over to some pretty standard halogens sealed beams on my 83 El Camino I had to use relays as the slight extra current draw was reaping havoc with my headlight switch. When you say "bulbs" do you mean you converted to H4 headlight housing and used H4 type bulbs? Thanks, s
monte70car
Years ago I changed out the head lights in my 70. I went with a halogens pair with a flat lens from Summit Racing. The headlights aren't used on the car but if they are it lights up the area pretty good. A few years back I brought a set for my 72 went to OPGI and got a set that takes a replacement H4 bulb and as a light that can be used either as a day time running light or as a turn signal. Mike Brichta
My suggestion to anyone trying to make headlights or any other electrical items (dash lights, blower motor, turn signals, spark, etc.) work brighter and better would be to upgrade to a 1 wire (105 amp) alternator instead of the stock generator/voltage regulator setup. This single upgrade will instantly greatly improve all electrical components in the car. I've done it on all of my cars and then you can simply buy halogen headlights from Rock Auto for around $10/each. Good luck on whatever you decide!! stangeba
Mine are seal-beam halogen type. They look stock. I still have the stock 35 AMP alt and at idle they do dim some. Bruce
420ponies
I agree on the upgrade to 105 amp alternator. with a set of Halogens is is the perfect solution. I'm running this in mine and liking it !
Paul Bell
I believe the best upgrade is to a complete engineered LED headlight, not a LED stick bulb stuck into an aftermarket halogen housing. I want them. Costly though, like $450 a pair for the JW Speaker version. Genssi LED offers the same thing for about $260 a pair. http://www.jwspeaker.com/products/led-headlights-model-8700-evolution-2/ http://www.genssiled.com/product-category/bright-led-headlamps/ The truck-lite at the bottom is the same as the Wagner 6024LED
72Ragtop
1st thing....with car running, check Voltage at battery that at Lo and then Hi headlite wire connectors. More than likely, depending wire & switch age you'll see a 3 to 5 voltage drop at the headlites. Add relays.
MC1970U
Lots of great info. I was happy with the improvement when I upgraded the headlights to halogen on my Elky. I think I will do the same on the MC, use relays and consider the alternator upgrade. Thanks again everyone, s
