its probably been asked on here many time but i cant seem to find it.

ive got the standard 12 bolt 2.73 open diff and i thought i remembered reading that you can just pick up a series 3 carrier and swap it in.

does this sound right? im sure someones done it before. 3.73 or 3.31's

anybody know what the spline count is? i dont know if it 28 or 30

i would probably want to get a rebuild kit as well assuming my axles are in good shape.

would i have to look into a new drive shaft? or do you think it could handle the speed of more revolutions

thanks as always, this place is a wealth of knowledge

Hey Brandon, the axle spine count is 30 on your 12 bolt. You need to go to a series 3 different when going to the gears you mentioned. Another key difference is the truck 12bolt vs the car 12bolt. They are different and not interchangeable. You drive shaft is fine, just get it balanced and replace the u joints while your at it. Good luck!

thanks Murphy that's just the info i needed. i'm pretty excited i think the posi and different gears will make a world of difference for my car. since i'm swapping the whole carrier do i need to worry about things like pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash? i know it can get pretty in-depth (no pun) once you get in there. i've never messed with any of this stuff before. any special tools? am i fine to go with jegs or summit or do you think i should talk to a shop that specifically deals with rear ends?

thanks again any and everyone

Personally, I'm going with a driveline shop, I bought a rebuilt series 3 Eaton posi, and getting 3.42 gears thru the shop. A few hundred for labor and it's done right with a warranty. Going with US Gear ring & pinion set as their the only US made gears and are recommended by several folks I know. When I swapped the auto tyranny for Muncie m20 4speed I had the drive shaft redone so all that's left is my differential rebuild. Good luck!

honestly i might go the same route. i think richmond and yukon were both bought out and are now made over seas. really  whats a couple hundred bucks to get it done right the first time and have the piece of mind.

thanks again for all the knowledge and advice. bet that 4 speed is pretty fun.

yeah get all your parts and let the shop put it together for you..then u just bring it home and put it back in the car...i also went with a rebuild kit, 343 gears from yukon and a tru trac posi unit with 33 spline axles. If i were you, i would also replace the axles...u dont wanna start playing with your new posi unit on those 45 year old axles.....ijs
