1970mcss
I'm replacing my radio to the original AM 8 Track. I pulled out the am radio that was just filling the hole in the dash. This socket with the bulb was up in the dash and I'm not sure where it should go. It seems to have a fiber optic on it. Any ideas?
RealRed70
It goes to the gauge cluster. It plugs into one of the spots on the printed circuit board on the far right side of the cluster. It is a fiber optic cable and light source for the ash tray. This was part of the auxiliary lighting option.
1970mcss
Thanks Dan, Is that easy to get at with the dash pad off? From the top or can I get it from the bottom??
RealRed70
It is best to get to it from the top. The cable is missing from the socket in the picture below, but that is where it goes. It has to be in a location that lights up when the headlights are turned on.

RealRed70
I added a picture and more information to my last post. Check it out. I think I should be an automotive consultant. Lol.
1970mcss
That really helps, I've only been a member for a short time and amazed on how much help and knowledge is available on the site. You should be a consultant! Thanks again
RealRed70
ALWAYS remove the negative battery cable before reaching in behind the instrument cluster. If you do not you risk the chance of frying the printed circuit board.
1970mcss
Will do, my other question on that bulb/socket is should it light with the lights on or does it have to be on the circuit board to light up?
RealRed70
In order to light up it has to be in the printed circuit board. That is where it gets power and ground from.

RealRed70
The other end of the fiber optic cable should be attached to the top of the ash tray housing.
