Plastic inner fenders for my 71

Took my first drive yesterday, started and ran great however I did notice the plastic inner fender under my battery is cracked way more that I remember. Time to start the search for the best new plastic replacements. I don't want steel, my car is mostly original. This set was replaced over 25 years ago and I think I got them at the Chevy dealership! I will need to pay attention to how well the battery try is supported. Any recommendations are welcome!

I have bought two sets from the parts place, the closest to original you can buy. If I remember correctly I have only seen a set of NOS ones on EBAY, and they went for a pretty penny. Now the repops I believe are no textured as nice as the general's but they come close enough for my liking.

Bruce,

The plastic inner fenders offered by the Parts Place, Inc. are specifically reproduced to match the original size and shape of the first gen Monte Carlo - they are NOT Chevelle inner fenders!  They are made of a tougher, stronger and more flexible plastic than the originals and I don't think you could crack one if you tried.  I installed a set on my '70 4-speed car six years ago and I love them.  I have had to remove the driver's side twice and it was a breeze to remove and reinstall compared to the steel inner (Chevelle) fenders on my '70 SS car.  There is no paint to scratch off (although you can scratch/mar them with sharp tools) and they clean up easily and shine up beautifully for car shows.

Here's a photo of mine right after they were installed six years ago:

Just go to the Parts Place Inc site put in Monte Carlo 1971 and enter "inner fender" in the keyword box.  It will bring up part number BP1056M which is a pair of plastic inner fenders for $229 plus shipping and tax.

If you can find a better pair of plastic inner fenders, buy them instead.

Mine were from The Parts Place had to "modify" a few holes but otherwise fit and look good. Back in the late 70's one of my fellow autobody repairman (butchers) told me if it can't be seen by a passing car at night don't worry about it. Words I have tried NOT to live by.

This post comes at a perfect time. I just noticed my battery tray is cracking and needs to be replaced. When I did my inner fenders 16 years ago I was unable to locate a source for Monte specific ones, and had to use the chevelle ones instead. I have been looking for a reason to replace them ever since I heard the Monte ones became (Or always were, I have no idea) available.

I have to ask though. Do the Monte ones come with the extra material necessary to help support the battery tray? I seem to remember this was a slight issue when I installed the chevelle ones, but come on..... 16 years.

Thanks for the great advice everyone! The Battery tray support thing has me wondering to, I don't remember what the heck I have, if anything, under the metal tray, I will take pictures as I remove the battery and inner fender.

I think I remember someone just posting a page from the shop manual on the whole battery tray subject.
