2 Engine questions

My first question is can I delete that plastic vacuum cannister and the 3 vacuum lines from it on my '72? Will I see any chance in how my car runs or drives?

 

My second question is, what is the metal cylinder that has wire going to it and a plunger on the other end on the front of my quadrajet carb? The plunger expands and appears to push my throttle linkage to create a high idle, though it seems like mine gets stuck and my idle ends up being 1100 all the time. Can I disconnect it until I can replace it?

You can delete the canister under the hood. I removed mine and I have no issues with gas smells. It is part of the venting system for the gas tank. As far s the carb, are you still running the Quadra jet?

I think what your referring to is the gadget used when A/C Compressor is running.  It jumps acceleration when compressor pump starts putting load on engine at low idle, keeping engine from stalling out,  I think@! :fart:

I had a 2 barrel on my 350 with that same solenoid that I assumed was for a fast idle during cold start. Had no AC. It would turn off after a short time but can't recall how it knew coolant temp.

it could be 2 different things...

 

idle kicker for AC or anti-dieseling solenoid which when the engine turns off, it closes the throttle plates to prevent engine run-on

My 71, NO A/C 350 4BBL had the solenoid. Mine is (was) a TCS or Transmission Controlled Spark that is an emissions control device.

When the transmission shifts into 3rd gear, the solenoid will energize, or pop out. When you let off the accelerator the carb returns to idle and during "coasting" an excessive amount of fuel is drawn into the carb due to the high vacuum. With the solenoid energized, the mixture is not as rich, lowering the emissions. This Solenoid will also energize in reverse, as a way to adjust the RPM, that is higher than when in first or second gears.

The second part of it's function is to eliminate any vacuum from the carb, getting to the distributor vacuum advance canister, causing it to advance the timing, until the trans shifts into third gear.

I removed all of this way back in 71, and connected the vacuum from the "PORTED" side of the carb to the dist vacuum can, so I have additional advance to the dist when ever I push on the accelerator, not just in high gear, (or Reverse for adjusting).

The TCS also controls when the carb would draw "fumes" from the charcoal canister (on the driver side ft rad support).

 

I still have all of the evaporative emissions hoses and canister attached and working. I replaced the original canister about 10 years ago with a new one.

It's all connected in some way, the only question I would have is regarding the gas cap and if anything needs to change with it.

Pre-emissions TCS vehicles used a vented gas cap, my 71 is NOT vented. 

 

(side story) I still remember my dad's 1962 Pontiac Catalina dripping gas all over the driveway after he filled up the gas tank and it got hot outside. Good times!
