Found a 1970 Monte Carlo with 454 sticker on air cleaner

Single snorkel air cleaner has 454 sticker.  Block is stamped "CE171187."  Warranty replacement blocks are stamped CE.  Turbo 400 Transmission tag is stamped "70-CR" and the sequential number to the car is stamped on the driver's side of the transmission case.  Rear end is stamped "CRJ" it's a 12 bolt with 2.56 gears.  It has rear sway bar with boxed lower control arms.  15" Rally wheels with new tires.  There's an assembly on the bottom of the frame which attaches to the upper right rear control arm.  Rear heavy duty frame braces that attach to the control arm mounting brackets.  Air conditioning.  There's a large tank on the left inner fender well under the hood.  Power disc brakes and power steering.  Fiber optic windshield washer bottle.  Power windows, bucket seats, center console, tilt steering, 3 spoke steering wheel, tach with gauges, rear window defogger, AM/FM stereo 8 track with 2 rear speakers, rear view mirror light, visor mirror, courtesy lights, deluxe seat belts, tinted glass, and driver's remote mirror.

 

Paint code 58 Autumn Gold, vinyl top code H gold, Trim code 769 strato bucket seats with vinyl saddle interior.  Build code 10C is third week of October 1969.  Built at BL Van Nuys assembly plant.  The car was repainted years ago a slightly darker color than original.  The gold vinyl top was replaced with a black one at the same time.  Front bumper was likely replaced since it does not have bumper guards.  Driver's fender has 1 landing not 3.  Bumper filler panel has GM sticker on bottom.  All other sheet metal appears to be original.  No rust on the bottom side of the car.  No evidence of any previous patch panels or rust repair.  Trunk floor is very solid and doesn't have a single pin hole in it.  Tiny spots of rust in both rear wheel lip openings just starting.  One fender is rust free at the bottom.  The other has a small spot of rust below the trim.  Passenger SS454 emblem is on the car.  Driver's side emblem still attached to trim and sitting inside the car.  The Monte is very straight.

 

Valve covers are chrome not painted.  Holley carb not quadrajet.  Motor starts right up and runs strong.  No smoke or mechanical noises.  Car pulls very hard and transmission shifts well.  Approx 2k RPMs at 60 mph.  Drives nice and straight without squeaks or rattles.  Headlights, dash lights, turn signals, brake lights, courtesy lights, console light, trunk light, and rear defrost all work.  One tail light out.  Radio makes static noise.  Tilt is very tight.  Steering wheel is very nice.  tach and all dash gauges work.  Gauge faces very nice.  Clock stopped working circa 1970.  Heater works.  Fan works on all speeds but high.  Did not try A/C.  Belt still on compressor.  Carpets are decent for age.  Both front seats have small tears starting.  Console is cracked.  Rear seat dirty, but in tact.  Headliner surprisingly nice for 47 years old.  All power window motors work.  Exhaust has nice note.  Windshield is cracked on passenger side.  Car drives well for age.  Odometer shows 80k.  Last title transfer was in 1981.  Same owner for 36 years.

 

8.5x11" paper sheet was attached to the top of the gas tank.  Very dirty and decaying but cleaned up well enough with a tooth brush to read most of it.  Paper reeks of gasoline.  Numbers in upper right corner match VIN number on car.  Engine box says "RN" transmission box says "CR" rear end box "RJ."  Built in Van Nuys.  Shows paint code 58, top color H, and trim 769 same as cowl tag.  Originally delivered to Chuck Olson Chevrolet in Seattle which is still in business.  Car is currently located about 50 miles from dealership.  40 entries spread over 5 columns. Some are very hard to read but appear to be the following:

Don, since you've found/seen a VIN-matching Build Sheet with RPO Z20 and a 454 with matching partial VIN numbers, that has to be a genuine '70 Monte Carlo SS454!  It is nicely optioned, also, but in somewhat rough condition.  You have done a remarkable job of describing the car in detail.  Are you considering buying it yourself or were you just alerting other club members of its existence?

 

By coincidence, my '70 SS was also built in Van Nuys the third week of October, '69 and is Autumn Gold with a black vinyl top.  In fact, my Build Sheet looks much like that one except I don't have a sport wheel, tilt column or tape player. 

 

You are likely to get several replies listing all of the things that are different from a showroom stock '70 SS but all of that is minor compared to the verified pedigree of this car. If the price was right, it could be a great starting point for you or someone that has been lusting for a genuine '70 SS.  Thanks for sharing!

You found a high option SS. The air tank with compressor and the air control valve connected to the upper, rear control arm are part of the automatic load leveling system. The system is part of the SS454 package, but it was also an available option on the non-SS cars.

I had a chance to look over the car again today.  The A/C compressor does actually engage when the engine is running and you turn on the A/C.  It doesn't blow cold, but the entire system is intact.  

 

I noticed the radiator tank was stamped Harrison.  The tag attached to the radiator and is stamped "BR."

 

The alternator is stamped 1100843 61A.

 

I'm actually amazed how well it runs and drives for an unrestored 47 year old car.  I pulled the distributor cap and it had decades worth of corrosion on the contacts.  The plugs and wires look ancient.  I wonder how much better it would run if it had a fresh tune up.

Nice looking monte, lots of options.

The only things I catch are the Non SS exhaust tips on the rear and then the Strange Deluxe seat belts.

Strange as in 1970 had the Large Deluxe Seat Belt Buckles Front and Rear and the Console reflects the Dual Large Buckle Holders,

yet the Pictures show sitting on the front of both buckets SMALL Deluxe Buckles........? The shoulder belt you can see is a Large Tongue, you cant see the waist belt Tongue that retracts but they didnt use the Small Head Buckle until 72.

still easy changes, and yes Counter Exchange engines were used as warranty replacement blocks from either cracked blocks or thrown rods etc.....

Darren, our '70 SS was built in Van Nuys. It came with the deluxe belts, and the waist belts have the small buckle. I believe the purpose was to make it easier to put the belts on and not have to adjust or switch them, once they are adjusted to length. I've seen other '70 Montes with the small buckle.

Hey Dan when you pull out the small buckle seat belt all the way to the end what is the Date numbers and letter on them ?

That is Bizzar...... My 1970 SS and my 1971SS as seen in my signature Picture Both Have Factory Deluxe seat belts with the separate Should belts and Both have the Large Head Deluxe Belts for both waist and shoulder applications.

My '70 SS was built in Van Nuys in 10/69 and has the deluxe seat belts with small buckles for the seat belt and large buckles for the shoulder belt.  My wife finds that configuration somewhat confusing as she is used to grabbing which ever buckle out of the console holder and cinching down the strap on my other '70 with standard seat belts.  Neither of us ever use the shoulder belts ...

Hmmmmm, wondering if the Deluxe large head buckles on both front belts is a Canadian Built thing or not........ maybe. Just like the Dual Sport Mirrors on CDN built Montes, definitely some strange mixes...

My 70, non-SS Monte built in the Baltimore Plant has the small buckles for the front driver and passenger sides but the large adjustable buckles for the front middle passenger and the three rear belts, all of them deluxe belts.  The front driver and passenger with the small buckles with retractable belt that latch into the small buckles.

I hope that makes sense.
