Question about manufacturing plants, shipped to area?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm looking for a 70 Monte to buy. I found one that has lots of rust, but this will be a frame off; last car I rebuild type project (years...).  This car looks to be customer ordered, because of the options it has... My first 70 was also customer ordered, I found the Baltimore build sheet. This car I'm looking at was built in Flint, no build sheet will be in it. Dang!  Then I got to thinking about the factory making cars, and "MOST" of them being shipped to an area around them? I know some cars were built at a factory and shipped across the US, but those might just be special and not the norm? Does anyone know more about this?

My 70 Monte was built in Baltimore and shipped new to North West Florida. I bought it 17 years later just 30 miles from original dealer. I REALLY HATE THAT I SOLD THAT CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another question is the assembly plants themselves. I've known of California, Baltimore, Flint and recently Kansas City, but have never heard of a car from Atlanta, Framingham, Arlington or Fremont. Those are listed in our Tech page, but did they produce mostly Chevelles?

So the last question is, if Flint assembled a 70 Monte Carlo, "most Likely" the car was shipped to a dealer in that area or not?  I'm from the South, an DO NOT want a car from the north, it already has plenty of other rust to deal with on the body, without adding the frame and suspension to that list.

Sorry for the long post!   David

I ordered my 71 from a Chevy dealership in Rochester, Michigan. My car was built in Oshawa, Canada.

Special items?

350 4BBL

Stereo

Electric Trunk opener

Deluxe seat belts

4 spoke strg wheel

G70x15 WSW with rally wheels

P/S

NO A/C

NO vinyl top

All for $3735.00 out the door!

I got the build info sheets from Canada several years ago. Too bad they can't do that for the USA!

Good luck,

Bruce

David,

Someone my have proof of where first gens were built or not built but my empirical data agrees with your observations (including Oshawa, of course). I also think your assumption that dealer/customer orders were generally filled by plants in the region is reasonable just to manage transportation costs and delivery times.  My Baltimore built '70 was shipped to PA and my Van Nuys built '70 went to OKC.  Of course dealers were also know to share/trade cars in their inventory with other dealers so it's hard to say were a car from any plant may actually be delivered to a customer.

Regarding the Flint-built '70 you are considering, I'd say it doesn't much matter where it has been if it already has lots of rust.  I live in north central MN every summer where it is a common sight to see cars and trucks (especially) that have rust eating them up like a late stage cancer.  I bought a used Buick Enclave in MN three years ago to haul my visiting family around and it shows the effects of salted roads on the suspension.  I had to replace the hubs and CV axles last summer and had a horrible time getting the hubs to break loose from the cast aluminum yokes due to the severe corrosion between them.

I guess I don't understand why anyone would buy a rust bucket when there are still lots of rust free or minimal rust models available - unless they just enjoyed the challenge of replacing sheet metal and doing body work.  I know rusty vehicles are generally less expensive to acquire, but the cost in time and materials to fix them is also significant.  But, to each his own ...

My current Monte was a customer order and originally purchased at a dealer  in Williamsport, Pa and was built in Baltimore.

My first Monte which I purchased new off a dealer lot in Jacksonville, Florida was built in Flint Mich.  It seems odd it went all the way from Michigan rather than being built in the Baltimore plant which was closer to Florida.

I was wondering if maybe dealer stock orders may have been handled by the Flint plant and customer orders handled by other plants...... just a thought?????

Rob and others, THANK YA'LL for your replies! Now knowing a FLA dealer had a Flint built car on the lot, helps me out. Another interesting note, was the strike at Flint, didn't know about that, with Van Nuys building an IND car. Great info!!!!

The car I'm looking at is now is in the South, but wasn't sure if it has been here or a transplant. Since it's a flint built car, it won't have a build sheet to tell me the dealer it was sent too. It has "Southern" rust, meaning the vynil top leaked around the back window and rusted the trunk floor. Also the trunk weather strip channel is rusty from being full of crap. TOP DOWN RUST

What I don't want is to need a frame and all suspension parts because of "NORTHERN" rust... BOTTOM UP RUST. I plan on doing a frame-off, nice build but not perfect. I want to drive the fool out of it! I have a shop, knowledge of doing the mechanical stuff and a restoration shop literally 2 miles from my house. I will let them do the metal replacement and paint. I plan on doing most of the other stuff myself.

Again, THANK YOU for your replies. I'll update if/when I get the car.  David

David, I would think that if you found the build sheet it should say what dealer it was shipped to regardless what plant produced the car. If you buy the car maybe you fill find the sheet in a spot you don't expect it to be. Good luck and keep us posted

I've got an update. Looks like I will not be getting this car. Funny how he had it for 8 months and did nothing to it. I call about it and he texts me several pictures, and a lowest price is set. I text back after a weekend (he doesn't work on weekends), and the price is up another $600 because they worked on it. After talking it over with my wife, I agreed to pay another $300. He now states that with all the work and parts put on, the price is now $1000 more that when I first inquired about it.... I would love that car, but not playing his game!

So, I will get some other stuff sold, get some other stuff cleaned up and keep an eye out for another factory bucket seat 1970 monte. David

  • 2 weeks later...

My '71 is a Baltimore built but not sure how I can find info on original dealership?

It is on the build sheet, lower left corner. The build sheets were not left in every car tho, and Flint built cars supposedly never had one left inside.

After a little while searching the web, it looks like your car was delivered to Ammon R. Smith Auto Company in YorkPA.  That was located at 201 Carlisle Avenue, York Pa.

Here is a link for some pictures of the dealership from back in the 60's/70's.

Your build sheet had just enough information in that torn corner to get that information for you.
