Source for a windshield?

Recommended Posts

I had a guy get me a windshield, but the fit wasn't great, he got sloppy with the urethane at the bottom, and the antennae wire had a hard plastic boot on it, instead of being rubber. The wire wouldn't connect, so we took the windshield out. No wonder, he said it came from China! I'm needing a good fitting, hopefully American Made windshield. Can anyone help?

I bought a new windshield for my 72 a few years ago and was looking for a near exact windshield.  I ended up buying from a local Glass Distributor who carried replacement & believe it was PPG who manufactured it.  I will go and see if I can't find numbers from it tomorrow.  This was the factory tinted replica windshield glass as would have found on my Monte during assembly.  Fit was nice and you could see the difference from the original which had road rash, a crack & faded tinting from many years of use.  I must have been bad at some time because just a couple years later I got a new crack in almost the same place as my original had!  So far not spreading and hope it remains like that as it is minimal.

I got a new windshield from Auto City Classic today. I told the guy on the phone when I ordered it that I recently had a problem with one that came with a hard plastic boot on the antenna wire and it wouldn't connect to the original wire on my car. He said they sell a lot of this same windshield and he hadn't had anyone report a problem with one. After waiting 3 days longer than he said it would take to get it, I called and the guy checked the tracking number. It was still sitting in their warehouse. He blamed Fedex for not picking it up. Right. Well, I just checked it and it has the exact same plastic connector that won't fit my factory antenna wire connector. Factory connector measures .340 inches OD, and the new connector is .308 inches ID.

I'm getting tired of dealing with so-called experts at different parts suppliers that don't know the products they sell. They will probably want me to pay for return shipping, and it's their mistake.

Good news, Auto City Classic didn't know of the problem, but agreed that they'll refund my money, once I break the glass and send them a pic of it broken. They said the shipping is too expensive for them to take it back, and it can't be resold anyway.

I called another local installer and he said he's pretty sure he can get me one that will work.

Hey Dan, even up here in Canada I agree with Doug on PPG for windshields.

PPG supplied a windshield for my convertible 70 chevelle and both 70 and 72 el camino's and all fit with no radio plug issues or leaks. I also got one in my 70 monte with no issues from PPG via Standard Auto Glass up here.

That is the brand that my third supplier said he will get. I hope he's right. Thanks.

Can't remember the brand I used. I used to work for the windshield supplier for speedy, apple and standard auto glass. Probably ppg though these days the American suppliers are slipping in quality compared to some of the non US ones from what I hear.

The third supplier called when it came in. He said PGW is PPG. PGW is the first glass I got. His had the same plastic connector, too. I have another guy checking to see what connector Pilkington has.

Sorry Dan,    I had earlier indicated that I would look for relevant numbers from my front windshield.  I must now fall back on Age as my excuse for not following through.  I will make a strong effort to look tomorrow and report back.  I had no issues with the glass antenna fitment nor any other anomalies.  This PPG/PPW new windshield was added around 4 years ago.  I bought it through a Glass Distributor in Portland, Oregon.  I should have a receipt on File somewhere.

Okay Dan, this is the info I have.  I did not find any relevant numbers on windshield glass.  So I went thru my receipts and found the Invoice for the Windshield Glass.

Here is the P/N DW00724 GB NThis P/N replaces DW00724 GB N.  i guess that means this is the only Windshield Replacement made by PGW (Pittsburgh Glass Works)Visit (buyppgautoglass.com).

Could there have been a adapter that plugs into the Antenna cable or onto windshield that connects the windshield antenna and radio together?  Is the old glass still around?  Maybe when removed, that adapter  was never removed from old Glass to new Glass.  I had mine installed by my Body Man and he never mentioned any issues when installed, so I'm just wondering.  Just a thought!  I( had my oold windshield stored until about 2 months ago when I knocked it over and cracked it badly, so thru it out.  I would have liked to see what that connector on windshield looked like.

I don't know any reason why that Glass did not fit or the connectors were not matched.  Check my P/n and see if your glass was the same if you have documentation on it.

Does anyone know if there is an adapter for the windshield antenna cable?

Anyone have any experience with NPD windshields? I'm planning on going up to them in March to save on freight cost, since they're only a couple hours from me.

Thanks for checking, Doug, but this must be a new problem. I've talked to about 10 people to get a windshield, and everybody says they haven't seen this before. A local installer ordered from Pilkington and what he got was a glass with a label of Vitro. It has the rubber connector. Finally.

I did not try OPGI. I didn't want to have to dispose of another one.
