I have a 402 to drop in my 71. I am looking for some expertise here on what i have. The block casting is a 3999290 block pad near passenger side head reads CE250510. The heads are the rectangle ports with "hi performance" stamped in them with the casting of 3964291. Any help is appreciated. I am also considering selling this motor and keeping it a small block car if anyone is interested.

Hi. From what I can tell you have a service replacement block- ie the CE. The 2 is usually the year- 72. Is it a 4 bolt main? Some service replacements were. As for the heads they are closed chamber rectangle port heads. Same heads were used on the 70 LS6. A big port head for a small cube engine (the 402)

Casting number 3999290 was used for:

396, 68-69, 2 or 4 bolt, truck
402, 70-72, 2 or 4 bolt, truck
402, 70-72, 2 or 4 bolt, passenger

Passenger meaning full size, Camaro/Nova & Chevelle/Monte Carlo.
