American autowire classic series update

Hey everyone, so I installed the American autowire classic series update harness in my car, everything is working perfectly so far, accept my dash lights, when I tried to see if they worked I only had one light bulb light up in the dash, and right after that it burned my switch out, I've got a new switch, looked up a few things on the net that talked about adding a good amount of grounds to the rear of the cluster to a good body ground, I've done that, my printed circuit board is new, made sure all the bulbs were Good, made sure all my wiring was Good, everything checks out, anyone have any other ideas as to why this happened? I'll be going to try this new switch again this weekend, hoping maybe someone can shed some light maybe???

 

Also, I am having a problem with my wiper motor, I benched tested it completely and it worked Perfect, I've got it hooked up, and when I turn the key On, wiper switch in off position, the wiper motor started to run, i had to unplug the switch to get it to stop. I know i dont have the switch itself grounded which i have to do, maybe thats my issue? any ideas on that? Also how can you tell if the wiper motor has recessed park or not?

Christopher what type of bulbs did you put in the cluster after you did the wiring? I've done two of the AAW harness mostly with the updated fuses. I've never had an issue with the dash not lighting up or burning up a headlight switch. I'm sure you followed their pin lay out in the instructions when wiring the cluster plug, that would be the only reason for things to not work. If you put in LED they can go in one way compared to the original bulbs that let juice flow both ways. 

 

As for the wipers if the wires at the pump are plugged in the wrong spot the wipes will keep going even with the switch off. All first gen Monte's I've see have the recessed park (which means the wipers sit below the hood). Only the 72 have a extra ground wire for the wiper switch 70 and 71 (i believe) don't have the extra ground wire.

I would bend the contact tabs on the dash light sockets outward so that they put more pressure against the printed circuit board. Had to do things many times. Check all bulbs in your rear side marker light socket to be sure they are all good.

Robert, they are the regular peanut bulbs (194) I did follow the wiring diagram, I will double check everything when I get back there tomorrow. As for the wipers, there was no instruction for the recessed park, the diagrams that came with the kit are for Chevelle, would you happen to have a picture?

 

Dan, thanks for the tip, I'll do that to all the bulb sockets before trying again!

Christopher I will have to see if I have pictures at the motor. Right now we have a really bad wind storm so I'm not heading out to where the car is at. On my 70 I have a 83 Pontiac Trans Am wiper motor on it and the wipes sit below the hood. Hey Robert, so same instructions I have, on my wiper motor where the black white and light blue wires go, I have one terminal attached to the wiper motor above the 3 that's not used, same as You?

So that's a different style wiper motor than what I have, I'll have to take a picture of mine, and I'll post it here! I did get my dash lights fixed other than some bad light sockets, also had the hvac light socket ground touching the 12 volt live back feeding through the ground.

I think I may also have a bad wiper switch, I'll post a picture of mine and I'll see if I switch is maybe causing my issues.

The wiper motor on my is from a 83 Trans Am, so it may look different but the wiring is still the same.You should have a white wire coming off the motor to the pump. There is a ground which is the black wire, then there is the high speed wire which is the light blue wire. The other blue wire goes to the pump so when you push the wiper switch in it pumps the fluid to the hoes and then on to the window as the wipers wipe.

 

so at the washer pump you have a white wire and blue wire side by side. On the motor it's self you have black wire at the top, center the two white wires, and then the other blue wire at the bottom.

Thanks Robert, I double checked, it's all hooked up right so I think I might have a bad switch, I've ordered a new one, so I'll update as soon as I get it installed! Thanks for your help thus far, I'll keep you posted
