Hello All!

I'm haveing a hard time identifying the rear in my new-to-me 70 Monte to try and figure what gears the rear originally came with.

The "LE" is throwing me off more than anything. Anyone care to give it a shot?

That "LE" does not appear to fit with the axle stamp as those look raised and fresher vs. stamping inset into the metal.  Can you clean up that area to expose a clearer picture of the stamping?  I am referring to the .the Axle Tube stamp.

Here is a link to the FGMCC Tech Page that will aid you in identification if in fact a 70 Monte original axel.

The casting number 3959038 says it's a 12 bolt. For a 1970 car, it can be any of these codes. If you can't find the code, going by original engine and rear ratio will give you the code.

The casting 3959038 is 1969-1970 Chevelle. However there is no LE code used in those years. In 1969 a two letter code was used, In 1970 a three letter code was used for that year only then it went back to the two letter code. LE simply does not exist in those years. I would try a wire wheel to clean it up and you may be able to make out the original letters.

Thank you for the replies. I'm thinking maybe the LE is a recondition stamp or service stamp from a shop.

I'll see if I can get under there tonight and try again.

Well, it took me a while but I was finally able to crawl back under there and clean it up good. Nothing new to see.

I did find mention on the Chevelle forum of the 3959038 with LE axel marking as possibly belonging to the 70 GTO GP. More searching indicated that it would have had a 2.73-1 ratio. The information is all very scetchy.
