Tires

Welcome !!! As for the original tires it depends on what wheel your car came with. I own two 72 Monte's and one is a hub caps car so has a 15x6 wheel and came with h78x15 white wall tires. The other was ordered with 15x7 rally wheels and had G70x15 white walls. If you can find the build sheet it would tell you for sure. Good luck with your Monte

Welcome!

The tires were either G70-15 or G78-15 tires when new. Most were the G78-15 with two thin white stripes. In modern tire sizes they convert roughly to 215-70 R15 and 205-80 R15.

I organize the Western Meets for the club so maybe I'll see you at a meet some day. :)

Thank you so much for replying so quickly!  I wish I had the build sheet.  Interior was replaced in 1980 and again in 1994.  Rims are 15 x 7, rally sport.  It's had white walls since 1995, so I thought I would change it up and go with raised lettering.  I've had a few conversations with reps at Coker Tire.  I wanted to go with the Firestone Wide Oval, but those are a tad pricey, especially in a radial.  So it looks like the BF Goodrich TA's are my best option.  G70 or G78?  Is there a visible difference?  Performance difference?  I have included the only two photos of the car I have on my computer.  I will try to post more later.

If you are getting BF Goodrich I'd recommend either a 225/70/15 if you don't want anything wider than stock or if you don't mind a little extra width I find 245/60/15s fit nicely on the rally wheels.

Here are 245/60/15s on the stock 15x7 rallys.

Thanks Arron, no handling or drivablity issues? I'm trying to figure out how old my tires are in another post. The tires are 22570R15 so I think the are to tall. Thanks again

The car drove great on those. I have 245/60/15 tires on 15x8 rallys on my 70 Monte and 255/60/15s on the 15x7 rallys on my 71.

Arron, so you had 245's on your old SS and 255's on the new SS. Is there much difference?? Any clearance issues with the 255's? What size would you recommend or purchase if you were going to replace the tires on your car??

I’ve run 255/60/15s on stock 15x7 rallys on three different first gen Montes with no clearance issues. The 255s are a little wider and slightly taller. The sidewall will have more sidewall bulge than a 245. I personally like the 245 better on a 15x7 rim.

In a tire size comparison, The 255 seems to be the closest in height  to the original  215/70r15 for the speedo reading, the 245 reads a bit slower. The 255 10" wide versus 9.6" for the 245. I think I will try the 245 and see what happens. Thanks
