bbc aluminum heads

+1 on what Sam said. Stick with what works. With AFR & Dart Pro 1 you can never go wrong. Never cut corners on your heads. Along with your cam selection they are the heart and soul of a performance engine.

Guys - what about the Canfields that Don used to promote (not to bring up a sore subject :o)????

I've seen the flow numbers and they seem like a good street-strip head for the money.

if I was to build another engine, I would use AFR or Dart, more and more companies are making oval port heads, I would also go with ovals too

IMO unless you are building a drag car, stick with oval ports

I've seen examples of Brodix, Dart, and AFR heads and I can say that the AFR simply blew the rest out of the water as far as finish and smoothness of the ports etc. I would (and hopefully will eventually) try the AFR 305cc heads. The 315's would be a nice step up from them as well. I think that with all of these heads though, the biggest problem will be the raised exhaust ports. I'm not sure just how much work is needed to get the headers to fit right with that height change.

AFR BB heads withe the raised exhaust ports don't require any more header modification than standard ports. Just dimple two primary tubes slightly to clear the steering shaft, relocate your brake proportioning valve, and get rid of your A/C evaporator box(you will melt it soon after installation unless maybe you shield it) and presto your ready. I wouldn't trade my AFR 315CNC heads for anything other than a set of AFR 355CNC heads on a 540, or bigger mill. Although I have no experience with Canfield heads I've heard soom good stuff about them. Don never steered me wrong when I picked his brain and he was very much instrumental in choosing the cam gring I now have. I will probably agree that oval ports are better for a cruiser, but if you ever want to bang it down the drag strip square ports are the only way to go. The key is having the right stall converter. Get that right and square port heads are fine.

AFR 305's with the CNC chamber option is what will be going on my motor. If you want a cheaper head, it sounds like the Patriot head might not be too bad. You can research them on team chevelle as well. The Patriot has a big runner (320) for cruising though.

I've had customers use them and be okay, I have had customers use them and have $1000 worth of machine work to get them to work. It is hit or miss. I would stick to a USA mfg head that you know you will be able to get service on down the road.
