700R4 installation mods

Recommended Posts

Has anyone installed a 700R4 into there Monte? If so, did you have to modify your transmission crossover at all? I have installed the 700R4 with a 350 Cu.in motor and I have about 2/16th of an inch clearance between the floor and the drive shaft yolk and about the same for the governor cap. Has anyone modified the tranny mount support on the cross over before? I was thinking I should cut it off and weld it about an inch lower for more clearance between the floor and the tranny. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have a trans scatter shield which was hitting the florboard in my Monte.I cut the mount off and used a piece of 4" channel turned upside down from what the factory position was and lowered it 3/4" from original. No problems with clearance again.

Am currently installing a 700R4. Using TH350 crossmember and trans mount the 700R4 is too high. Mount seat on crossmember needs to be lowered approximately 3/4"-1" so that trans pan will be level, as Todd/George stated. This mod may/will cause engine to be lower in rear than originally. The carb mount on intake can be checked with a carpenter's level gauge. Get trans pan and carb mount as close to level as possible and then measure the amount that the mount seat on crossmember needs lowering. Ed

I took the measurements suggested in the above post. Yep, 1" is the amount to lower trans mount pad on cross member. Before I have this done I'm going to see if a 1" shorter trans mount is available. This would be the simplier modification. Ed

On my TREMEC, I just fabricated a adapter bracket out of thick angle irons and bolted it to the holes in the original trans crossmember (which was about 1" too high)with very beefy Grade 8 bolts. Work like a charm so far (3000 miles). No welding necessary, just some cutting (for the bracket) and drilling smile.gif
