T-TOPS

BEWARE!

I have heard of A-Body owners who put one of these pop-up sunroofs in. The roof is an important structual body member on A-Bodies. As a result, there was increased flex in the roof area, the sunroof frame's distorted and the sunroof started leaking after a short time...

Body integrity will be an important issue if you do something like this, or build a convertible for that matter... smile.gif

Cutting the roof always compromises the structural integrity however if a convert can be done then why not t-top. Ive seen sun roofs not a factory option I guess?

Andreas i think your monte w/ the side pipes would look pretty hot w/t-tops

I agree, Nico smile.gif

Anyhow, if you look at the custom-made convertible Montes, you will realize that they involve CONSIDERABLE extra stiffening, if they are made correctly....

Not to start a Mustang discussion here, but: I was at the drag strip several years back talking to a guy who had an 87 or 88 hatchback that had been converted to T-tops. In those years, a t-top was available. However, the person that did the conversion did not stiffen up the body to compensate for the loss of the structure in the roof. This car, which wasn't really worked over, would twist so bad coming off the line that you could see it from the grandstands.

Are our Monte's built tougher, sure. Full frame and all has to be stronger than a Unibody. But, the roof integrity is still a vital part of the overall picture.

Do you think fabricating some custom extrusions for the roof is the way to go or should I go with a full structural body cross member out of a donor convertable?

I don't know if I would even attenpt any mods as this Monte might turn out to be a true SS with a motor swap. I'm shipping it up from Alabama and once I get it I'll do more research on it's true origins. If its not a true SS or not a number matching non-SS then the glove are off. Heat up the torch and get some new blades for the sawzall. Maybe even some tail fins from a 59 impalla. CRAZY

Don't now if I'm right, but it seems to me that if you boxed in the center portion of the frame, (the rest already is) it would give the additional strength needed.
