Restoration of the Big Green 70

As I stated when I joined and introduced myself in the new members forum. I am a El Camino guy, my El Camino being a 1970. and this Monte Carlo is a project for my sister.

The Car:

The Car: The Monte Carlo is a 1970, that I purchased from the original owner in January 2012. I since began a complete restoration on it. It is originally a 350/350 car and I plan on keeping it that and only changing to a 4 barrel carb. The car is Dark green with Dark green interior and a Dark green vinyl top and I plan on restoring it to that, since green is my sisters dream color for her Monte.

Buildsheets: I have found 3 buildsheets in the car, one in pieces but luckily i have almost all the pieces, that was under the front seat on the passenger side. The second sheet was found on top of the gas tank is complete and almost completely readable. The third was found in the rear seat back but is not for my car it is for a 1970 Camaro that was built in front of my car, due to the sequence number on the sheet.

Restoration plan:

Pull the car apart, front clip off, engine and trans out, interior and glass out. and access the body damage, rust, and worn parts.

Start with metal and body work. Engine and trans will be rebuilt to factory specs (with possible modern upgrades where needed).

Interior will be factory with the exception of adding a hidden modern stereo.

upgrades different the factory

  • 4 barrel intake and carb
  • Bumper guards front and rear
  • Hidden modern stereo
  • Gauges dash instead of light dash

The roof skin is junk so I plan on using a chevelle panel and modifying it. The cowl and fenders have typical lower rust.

I was staying quiet, no Green/Blue battles from my end, we all know after the scientific research over the years that green is better lol

Nice looking project there, I always love seeing someone fix a car that everyone else wrote off for dead!

Convertible would be nice, but it would be much less work to put a new roof on that one!

Man, if that's being quiet I would hate to hear/read something from you that wasn't so quiet. grin

That was probably the same research that proved every GREEN has a healthy dose of BLUE thrown in to disguise the YELLOW! grin

hahah well regardless of which color is the best...this monte is gonna be the factory GREEN with the GREEN Vinyl top AND the GREEN interior. lol that is how my sister wants the car. she currently drives a GREEN Jeep Cherokee, that I saved from the crusher, just needed a motor. Oh! and my mom has a

GREEN Jeep Grand Cherokee.

My short term goal for the Monte is to have the metal and body work done this winter. And as much fun as a convertible would be, I do live in the great state of Washington, soooo think I will keep the metal roof. lol

Yep, Matthew will fit in just fine here! wink It's all in good fun, there's even pics of green and blue Montes parked next to each other and owners sitting together at meets with hardly any tension kicking

I figured I should share some pics of parts I have began to collect for the rebuild of the Monte.

IMAG1329.jpg

These parts I purchase from Jared. A new fender extension to replace the rusty one and a set of marker lens.

IMAG1331.jpg

This is a pair of NOS rear bumper guards I picked up for a good price.
