My family was all GM. When I was very young my dad had a 64 Biscayne that started as a straight 6 and three on the tree he then went to a 409 with a four speed. Him and my uncles on my moms side were always working on cars. My grampa on my dads side owned his own garage up in Cleveland and my dad would go up and work on cars with him and his half brother. My first car was a triple black 76 Monte with swivel buckets it was rusty but it was cool but it caught fire before I turned 16. My dad also had a 67 SS Impala fastback with a 327 like this one My sister who is 11 years older than me ended up with it and cracked a head on it then dad dropped a 283 out of the 64 Chevelle wagon we had in it. He also had a 65 3/4 ton Chevy truck road like a rock but I loved that truck. We had alot of Impalas later dad started buying Olds Delta 88 and 98 those cars rode nice and had 455 in them. Cars I have had were 76 Monte fire car 76 Buick Regal wrecked it also shared with my other sister 78 Malibu dog 76 Malibu kept for 10 years looked like crap but had a posi and unknown very powerfull 350 car was abused 75 Blue with white Landau Monte wish I still had it 75 maroon Monte bought for 300 fixed bent frame drove untill a lady ran a red light and hit me in the drivers door tearing the rearend out and totaling the car got 1500 from her insurance for the car and parted it out. During the time I was driving the maroon Monte I went to a junk yard by Columbus Ohio and found my first 71 SS 454 Monte after the 75 got totaled I lost my mind and bought a 2000 Eclipse I could not afford the Trans Am I wanted I also had a 88 Caddy and a 70 Monte driver at the same time. Since then I have had 83 Electra 91 Roadmaster 93 Lumina 96 Lumina 05 Impala 71 Monte sold to a friend to buy current Monte 03 Grand Am 05 Malibu 95 Altima flipped and made good money 91 Silverado dad has it now 90 Silverado 98 Silverado 98 Grand Prix 07 Impala 03 Grand Prix 09 SS Impala and my 71 SS 454 Monte and a bunch of 70-77 Monte parts cars. Sorry to ramble.

Some great stories from members. My family was on the poor side so they had to buy what the budget would allow. I do believe that there has been an aray of all brands over the years. My dad drove a lot of GM cars (Buick, Cadillac). Mother's family were Ford people. Being in the automotive field, my dad drove what brand that he worked for. When I was really young, my parents had a Crosley station wagon, Kazier/Frazier and the grandparents drove mostly GM. 50 Buick and 57 Chevy 4dr and 50 Dodge pick-up (I learned to drive on that one). We've had Hudsons, Fords, VW as I was growing up. Then my parents bought a 58 Chevy Brookwood S/W. This one went to Alaska.
My first car was a 53 Ford 2dr post 6cyl which I wrecked after four weeks of ownership. Then I walked for 3 years and the next car was a 55 Olds Holiday four dr. First new car was a 1968 GS 350 auto. Since that time I've had a few off brand, but mostly GM. Since I started to drive in 63 I've had 74 different cars and trucks. Crazy I know but I used to use cars I could buy for wholesale and fixer uppers so I could make extra money. I'm all GM now and hope to stay that way. I did see a 2011 Mustant and darn that car looks good. Thanks to all for sharing your stories.

Growing up, my dad was more in love with a beer bottle than anything else, so we usually had what ever a couple hundred bucks could buy...usually some form of Mopar. In 1973, my mom got a 1970 Chrysler New Yorker and boy was that car sweet. I had to parallel park that yacht in order to get my license. Even as a small child, I was a "car kid," and could identify cars bymake and model at 5 years old. When the Monte Carlo came out in the fall of 1969, I said I would some day have one, and in 1977, I bought a 72 Monte. Had it until it was stolen in Sept 1978. After that, I bought MANY new cars, but none were the same as my 72. Finally, 29 years to the day my first one was stolen, I got the one I have now.

Well, I have a few stories that Dad told me from when he was growing up, he had a bunch of cool cars when he was young. He had quite a few really cool cars when I was younger, not all necessarily were GM, though. I remember a few specifically. The Monte Carlo, of course, he bought the '70 when I was about 4 years old. He had a Datsun 280Z when I was really young, dark brown in color, I believe I called it "the Race Car" since I could only ride in it with Dad, Mom didn't like driving it, my older sister was too young to drive (and it was a 2-seater), so it was always just me and Dad. He bought me a Mustang as my first car, it was a project '73 Notchback with a 351C, and unfortunately, I never got it fixed up enough to really enjoy it, so I had to sell it, but that was a pretty cool piece of my childhood. He bought my Mom a 3rd gen Camaro Berlinetta, he had friends that always had cool cars, and he was always telling me about his old cars from before I was born.
He's told me about cruising Woodward in his CJ7, the story of how his Judge GTO was stolen, the custom center console (with built in cooler) he put in the back of his Olds 442, the pair of Indy Pace Car Mustangs he had over the years, even stories about his Dad's Chevy Biscayne from when he was a kid. I loved talking cars with him, he taught me everything I know about the automotive hobby, and the memories from the times I spent with him growing up will always be some of my fondest memories of my childhood.
I'm a die hard Chevy guy, but I can respect other makes, mostly older cars though, and I can't say I'll never own a certain make of vehicle, but I will always have a tendency to buy GM. Or Jeep, pre-Chrysler, of course, but that's just because they are completely unique, and nothing anyone else makes can compare.
