  2. I was gonna wait until I got the opportunity to get them both out for side-by-side pictures, but I didn’t want to continue to tap dance around the technical issue I was asking help with. So here is where I’ll spill the beans. Mr. Lyman was gracious enough to sell me his baby, and she made the trip from Myrtle Beach to her new home in Chicago back in January. Some of the linkage on the choke was disconnected and missing, making cooler weather starts a chore, so she was left on the trickle charger until schedules permitted troubleshooting to commence, which was today. My mechanic came over and he was able to scavenge the necessary pieces off another carburetor to get her running. However the choke spring itself is shot so I have one coming from the parts place to be installed upon arrival. But while working on the carb, my mechanic pointed out two vacuum lines that weren’t connected. We cycled through all the settings for climate control and they all cycled as they should. This guy actually had a 71 SS up until about 14 or 15 years ago so he knows the car in and out, but he was confused by the vacuum lines and the lack of obvious culprits. He asked me to dig up what I could regarding schematics so he has something in front of him the next time we can get together and finish this thing. He sold his business a year ago and no longer has the Monte, so all his relevant literature went with the sale All that said, the only time I drove her was around the block to get her in the garage after I had to push her off the trailer upon her arrival from Myrtle Beach. The driver was obviously not familiar with carbureted cars, and even if he were he would’ve never got it started with the bad choke and single digit temps the day the car arrived. He flooded the ever living hell out of her and was going to melt the starter with the way he was cranking on it. That’s when I almost dragged him out of the window and told him we’re gonna push the car off the trailer and I’ll get her started. Anyways… didn’t mean to be secretive, just wanted to give her a grand entrance in the company of her big sister. Those pictures will be forthcoming. But for now, here are pictures from my official first drive.. IMG_8455.MOV IMG_8455.MOV IMG_8455.MOV

  4. No he's not, Lol Welcome, you've found the best place for help and info to get your 72 back in shape. I'm partial to the 72's myself since my first car was one & I'm on my third one now. We love pictures here, post them up and that'll help give us a better idea what you're working with.

  5. Installed the new Hella head lights, look good. I did a quick alignment on the garage wall, I'm sure I'll have to tweak them a bit when its dark and I'm at the track. Then took another short run down the street 😁 Found out my power seat isnt working, I'll have to search the forums for some clues, hear the motor running but no movement so its seems mechanical not electrical. Another to-do added to the list 🤣

  6. Welcome Jarrett. As one of many in the group that recently rebuilt one, I can tell you it is no easy task, mentally and/or financially. As said above post pictures. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, they are not all stupid lol ( I have asked plenty that were kinda stupid). One person may not have all the answers your looking for but as a group I’ll bet you get all the answers you need. One awesome thing that I learned was if someone puts out incorrect information they have always owned it. That means a lot. Good luck, post pictures and get it running good enough to get to the meet Aaron ( Canuck) was talking about. Meeting some of the group in person is like a shot of adrenaline. It really helps.

  7. Need is a VERY relative term. Its for sure seen better days though. I for sure need to do some repair work on a quarter panel that will most likely require a bit of welding to really do it right. Other than that, it runs and drives, but the interior is green, and I just can't with the jalapeño meets olive drab. This monte was actually the first vehicle I've ever owned with a carburetor. I purchased it for a steal from a classic car dealer because the engine was supposedly "no good," but after closer examination, (and forgive my lack of appropriate terminology) it turned out the lever that operates the butterfly valve was installed upside when the previous owner did some work to it. After flipping that little part around, she came back to life. Transmission shifts, and the brakes kinda work, but there's very little paint left... so does it NEED a resto... probably not... but when has NEED ever had anything to do with it?! I DO tend to go overboard with stuff. I think its a side-effect of having aspergers. Can someone direct me to the thread on twin turbos? Only kinda kidding 😅

  8. Welcome! This is a great group here. We have the Western Meet coming up in Ashland, Oregon in June which will be a fun time. There’s also a group of us from WA, OR, BC and AB driving the coast together along the way to the meet.

  9. Welcome Jarrett, are you sure it needs complete resto? Maybe it could be one you work on as you enjoy and get to know before you decide complete restoration. Good luck with it there's a ton of info here and lots of people willing to help along the way, we love spending other people's money lol. Just kidding lots of great people here.

  11. So I’m as dumb as dumb can get. I went to get the pictures, pulled off the air cleaner and realized I have the Holley on there. What an idiot I am. So the vacuum hoses will be incorrect for your car sorry. But here are some pictures anyway. No sense wasting the film.lol. ( when’s the last time we talked about camera film)

  14. Happy Friday ! Got the Monte back from my friends shop yesterday, and as he put it, the cars ready now its all you 🤣 The timing was off, and he changed the jets in the carb, and apparently some bonehead ( who is sitting at the keyboard at the moment 🤣🤣) adjusted the choke in the wrong direction. So if it doesn't start snowing again, or temps in the 20/30's I should get the new headlights and electric fans installed in the next couple of days. The Easter Extravaganza was a complete madhouse glad I didn't take the Monte. Lost 2nd round in the DD but it was close. Thinking of running footbrake class along with street for more seat time in the Monte. I'll have to see next race day how they space the classes so I get some cool down time in between. Street class gets little respect in the big scheme, last Sunday made my time run at 12:30 and didn't get back on track for 1st round elimination till 6:50 😡During that time footbrakers made time runs, ran 1st round and ran the buy back round. It was a long day

  17. My work has been very very busy. I’m tired! I’ve had little time to work on the car. Where I’m at: I have my 496 shortblock assembled, Bullet cam is slapped in and the Flotek heads were flowed & ported a bit, port matched and filled with Manley severe duty components. I added pairs of boxer fans to the oil & trans coolers behind the grill. As much prep work I did to the stock evaporator box, my arm was twisted by a friend who says the Vintage Air system works just as well while eliminating the box under the hood. I’m doing it. I’m covering most of the firewall with some 3/16 aluminum I had, it’ll be powder coated. I had to pull out the right fender well-it’s steel. Although being about five years old, it’s actually starting to rust on the inside rear. Both have holes from hose stuff that I can better locate within the fender. I’m ordering a new set of fender wells-and they’ll be powder coated. As the dash needs to come out to do the AC box, and there was more arm twisting, I’m gonna get the Dakota Digital cluster to do at the same time.

  19. So I got a wild hair up my a.. I figured I’d see if it will fire up. Something that felt like oil was on the dipstick. Something liquid was in the radiator. I took my boroscope and looked down the intake for junk. Didn’t see anything. Looked in spark plug holes, didn’t see anything. Put my old 71 plugs in it. Put my paperweight 71 q-jet on. Battery. It cranked no spark. Wire to coil from points was split. Fixed. Spark. Dump some gas down carb. No fire. Tried starting fluid. Cranked. It went around about 4 times and locked to a dead stop. O crap. Put a socket on the crank bolt won’t move forward but went backwards. Hit the key split second crank and locked up again. So I’m guessing a bolt, acorn, walnut shell or something else got down the intake. Now the decision to part may become easier. The engine would be rebuilt anyway so big picture not a problem. Just thought I’d throw a little laugh out for you all
