Bill Ward of Pitt Meadows, BCThe 2024 Western Meet
by Aaron DodsworthThe 19th annual Western Meet was held in Summerland, BC and resulted in the second best attendance for a meet with 28 members travelling from 7 states and 2 provinces. Surrounded by lakes and mountains there was no shortage of scenery to enjoy during the meet. In addition to the Endless Summer Show n Shine, we incorporated a couple of cruises into the weekend.
Kevin and Lucas Uilkie decided this year that they would each drive a 1971 SS454 from their home in Arizona. They left for their 1,400 mile journey to Summerland on the evening of Monday Sep 9th. On Tuesday Lucas had tire problems but it was nothing a new set of tires wouldn’t fix. It appears Lucas was trying to secure the hard luck award early for this meet. On Wednesday the points in Lucas’ distributor quit which caused some delays in getting to that evening’s destination. Despite their setbacks they arrived in Summerland on Thursday as planned.
Kevin and Lucas starting their journey in ArizonaJack Reather, while travelling through Idaho from Utah, had a wheel bearing issue on the trailer he rented to tow the Monte Carlo on Wednesday. A few phone calls and some much needed repairs paid by the trailer owner got Jack back on the road.
There were many other members travelling from other great distances as well all arriving Thursday afternoon and evening. The reunion with members you know from past meets and that first handshake or hug with members you meet for the first time at the hotel is always a great moment. We spend the evenings mingling about the hotel parking lot visiting with everyone.
A group of 6 Monte Carlos travelling together from Creston, BC left Thursday morning.
Krista Peoples, Kevin Wick, Kathie Peoples, Tim Brown and Liam Peoples (Vaughn Peoples taking the photo)Friday morning we set off on a long cruise with some popular destinations along the way. After a curvy trip through the mountains we visited a private property in Keremeos with a unique collection of cars, parts and antiques. It is a cars in barns kind of place. We parked our cars on the lawn surrounded by mountains and spent two hours touring the property and having a picnic lunch. Two hours seemed to go by quickly as we were enjoying that property but it was time to move on to our next destination. We had brief stops at Yellow Lake then Lakeshore Drive in Penticton before stopping in at Summerland Sweets for some ice cream. Once Kevin Dyck was finished his countless scoops of ice cream we moved along back to the hotel. The weather was great all day and the group really enjoyed the cruise.

Saturday morning we woke up to damp roads from the rain overnight but was in the process of drying up. The car show in Summerland was only a few blocks from the hotel so the cars remained clean for the drive over to the park. We staged our cluster of 28 Monte Carlos in the car show and settled in for the day. We did have a brief rain shower during the day at the show but the sun popped out again allowing the cars to dry. Rounding out the car show in the afternoon was the Endless Summer awards ceremony and Kevin and Lucas Uilkie were both called over to receive the long distance award.

On Sunday morning we cruised North to Peachland to get some photos at the beach. Kevin Uilkie used his drone to get us some unique views of the cars parked along Okanagan Lake. We grabbed lunch at some of the many restaurants in Peachland before driving back along the lake to Summerland. That evening we assembled for the FGMCC dinner and awards banquet. After the awards we gave away a number of door prizes and everyone walked away with something. We capped off the evening celebrating Kathie's birthday with some cake and we all had one last night together.
