  1. 3.23 is a pretty good ratio for all around driving. You can also get 3.42 and 3.90 gear sets from aftermarket Richmond gears. They will both fit the posi carrier you have. The axle spline count is most likely 28 as the 31 spline axle 12 bolt 'O' type are usually pretty rare. We can check all that when you bring it by. Jim 330 659 7117 Jim J D RAce.com
  2. If you are going TO a 8.5 from any other GM rear you will have to shorten the drive shaft about 3/4" ...But best to mount the rear and then measure and cut after fully installed. You will nee the combo u-joint. If you had a BIG BLOCK with the large rear end yoke in a 12 bolt you will be fine. Jim
  3. CF on the axle tube passenger side would be 3.31 posi rear differential in chevelle monte or el camino 1971 or 1972 and could be 1970 also but in 70 they usually used 3 letter code CCF. Jim
  4. How come you did not ask LEO??? He restores the cars. Jim
  5. What is the carb? Check the idle air bleeds for dirt. and also if it is a holley check the power valve. or pull the power valve and plug the power valve if the car runs with brake on then that was the culprit. Just more to check Jim
  6. No all 10 bolt bolt BOP or chevy 10 or 12 bolt rear interchange with nothing more than a u-joint swap. THE ONLY rear that will require drive shaft modifications shortening or lengthening(depending on which way you are swapping) IS 10 BOLT 8.5 REAR FROM A 1971 1972 SKYLARK OR OLDS CUTLASS. 12 BOLT OLDS, 10 BOLT 8.2 PONTIAC BUICK OR OLDS ALL USE THE SAME 1330 YOKE 12 BOLT CHEVY CAN BE HAD WITH A BOP YOKE SMALL 1310 CHEVY YOKE AND 1330 CHEVY YOKE. (MOST VERSATILE REAR FROM GM) 10 BOLT CHEVY ALWAYS USED THE 1310 SMALL YOKE WITH EITHER U-BOLT OR STRAPS AND 4 BOLTS. 10 BOLT 8.5 USED ALWAYS 2 STRAPS AND 4 BOLTS WITH A MECHR3 1330 YOKE EXCEPT FOR THE NOVA 8.5 WHICH AGAIN HAD THE SMALL 1310 CHEVY U-JOINT YOKE. Confused yet? lol. just ask I will help you. Jim
  7. Good luck on that stuff. Also remember the oold saying you get what you pay for. 25.00 I would say your going to be in the same spot again REAL SOON...lol. I can build you a real nice rear all new parts 10 bolt 8.2 for 899.00 3.08 3.36 3.55 3.73 4.10 your choice.
  8. 3959038NF is the casting number of the rear. Is a 1969 carsting for chevelle and elcamino...could be a early 1970 monte...But since there was a GM strike in 1970 most montes got the pontiac tempest 10 bolt 8.2 in the early first 1/2 build year. GM55 ??? 1234567890 are nothing more that check digits to compare other number cast into the housing. If you look in the webbing around the rear cover you will find the actual casting date of the rear housing IE - L 12 9 meaning L= 12 month december 12 = 12th day of the 12 month 9 = 1969 year on the axle tube passenger front tube between the spring perch and cast center section pig will be stamped in suffix code 2-3 letter and more 4 digit number and another letter code ...plus there maybe a second row under that it might have a E or nothing at all.
  9. double check the ratio... 3.42 was a 10 bolt 8.5 rear not the 10 bolt 8.2 normally found in monte carlo chevelle el camino chevy rears. This might be a Buick or Olds rear with bolt in axles and require a drive shaft shortening modification of about 3/4" to fit ...But it would be a strong rear diff and you have bolt in axle shaft ready for racing. We build alot of these 71 72 rears for the Buick guys and they run 455 modified engine with GOBS of torque. We do usually replace the 28 stock axles with 30 spline custom Moser axles for the race application. An posi alone on ebay or craigslist is 200-300 alone... your getting a whole rear for almost that. Worse case you resell the parts and make money...lol Jim
  10. I'll take the 12 bolt every time. And keep the money in my pocket. The stock 12 bolt is way stronger than any stock 9" Look how much money you need to stick into a Ford 9" to make it strong. All the aftermarket 12 bolt chevy rears do not even have any mods done to strengthen it...Same as it ever was. OH and your 9" is a 10 bolt that is what people KEEP FORGETTING...Dana 60 is 12 bolt , 8 3/4 mopar is 12 bolt As far as ring gear size ...does not mean a thing for drag racing as your going a 1/4 mile ...back in the day larger ring gears were made to bleed off the heat of towing and the rpms of the 2 speed trannies heat on the freeway etc. larger gears dissipate heat. ford has the smallest 1.313 pinion front pinion support blows off from the small bolts and thin casting. cases shatter... But I will say this they sure made alot of them and they are CHEAP... price and built wise (stock form). They only became popular because they are a drop out...and CHEAP to buy cause Henry flooded the market under every Ford, Lincoln, Mercury and Truck... MASS PRODUCTION If you look at any aftermarket 9" it does not have ONE stock part left...lol. because it was plain not strong enough. The aftermarket had to redesign the whole rear to make it truly strong. besides assembly is your biggest concern in just about any drive line parts Engine, trans, rear end... you can have all the biggest baddest parts and if you install them wrong you have big bad JUNK parts... Keep your car GM and be proud... It is your car and you can buy what you want...We are still free with choosing here in our wonderful country... I still have some freedom of speech too. Take care and have a great time on the drag race seen what ever you do choose to use... Jim
  11. Bob I am right here in town Richfield, Oh Give a call I will hook you up. Jim Mitschke
  12. Tim, I can offer you options on the price of clutches and springs we are a dealer for Randy's and JT diff. PLUS we have buy ins with Moser Engineering if you need better axles too. Jim All discounted for the site. Ask Leo
  13. if it is a 10 bolt 8.2 chevy yes plactic tag on the fill plug male 7/16 square (outie) If you have aopen diff (non posi) you will have the 3/8 female (innie) IF you have a 1970 with a 8.2 tempest (bolt in axle rear) you will have a posi tag that is metal and hangs off the rear driver side 5 oclock cover bolt. If you have a standard non posi tempest rear you will have a male 7/16" outie again. Hope this clears the fill plug deal. Take care, Jim

    trani linkage

Well linkage is just mecanhical. It does not really do anything but select the gear from the outside lever on the tranny. So even if you had the lever all off like 1st was 2nd and 2nd was 3rd and so one it will still engage in the gear. Sounds like to me something inside the tranny is a miss...?? NOT GOOD. Could be as simple as the lever in the tranny was installed loose or rattle loose or the vavle body might be missing stuff essential to the workings. The only sure way to tell if it is the inners of the tranny or the external lever adjust ment is to full remove the linkage and jack stand the car with a brake and gas pedal (person) controller and you manually move the tranny lever into and out of each gear. If it all operates fine that way your linkage is cause the havoc. Good luck oh if it is not the linkage ...My GOD Bless you. That means dissassebly AGAIN
