  2. Thank you everyone....tomorrow my dad is going to look at the timing as I have a feeling that is the issue because everything else is checking out...Thanks again, best club ever!!!!
  3. Not yet...I believe he is doing that tomorrow Patrick...thank you I will definitely let him know to be sure to do that...
  4. Hi Club Members....my dad has a '70 SS that won't start for the past few days. He's changed the oil, points, plugs, wires, and cleaned the distributor cap. It turns over fine but will backfire...any thoughts on next steps? Maybe timing? Any help would be appreciated...Thank you

    71 monte ss

Fatblock.....I'm sure this thread has run its course but I've been out for awhile due to personal issues -- but I'm back Not all of us are blessed with having documentation to prove the SS package as some of Monte's were built at the GREAT Flint, MI facility (like mine)...at that plant I have heard that the build sheets were destroyed and no one at this time has been able to find a build sheet with a Monte from that facility (please correct me club if I'm wrong)..all my numbers (engine code and vin match up) along with the specifics that would come with the SS package like the air leveler system, boxed control arms, shock protector plates, etc. etc. Just do you homework and you will be fine, I'm sure you've taken the advice of many others in this club with alot more knowledge than I have, hope it all worked out for you and if not, it will in due time.

    1970 SS COPO

To my knowledge just the build sheet will prove or disprove it. The rumors have always been there but until the car is produced by its owner, looked by several members of the club who have a greater knowledge than me, and can compare the build sheet it won't exist. I don't think there is a way to get stats from GM, from what I understand from many members on the site I think many if not all of the GM paperwork from the states were destroyed (other than the build sheet that may have come with the car). I believe Canadian cars have stats. Hope someone else jumps in as I'm not 100% sure myself....Troy
  7. Love that look on the tires, nice job and with such a steady hand. Did you tape part of the tire off or just use the pen and a steady hand? Thanks--Troy
  8. The trunk mat I have is not made of the same carpet as the interior of the car....Mine is more of a vinyl type with a felt backing...not sure how they came out of the factory if they had one at all. Can anyone verify? Thanks-Troy
  9. Soak in very warm to hot water to give them some flexibility, they'll fit then. Troy
  10. Email sent gprimm and thank you....Troy
  11. Dropped the tank and only found a small corner of the build sheet. Any idea how to decifer the boxes? I have boxes 15 thru 35 showing on the corner. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks--Troy
  12. I bought a 2nd 1970 Monte SS back in late February and have been looking for the build sheet with no success. It is a Van Nuys car so I was expecting a build sheet somewhere in the car. I have looked under the dash pad, under the front and back seats, behind the plastic cover in the back of the bucket seats, in the door panels, and under the carpet. When replacing the rear bumper I got a better look at the gas tank and I need some advice. I am able to look with a very strong flash light into the top of the tank and I see paper in two areas. One on the left side of the filler neck and one on the right side. I think this is the build sheet but can't tell, I can only see it is paper. My question is this....is there anything else this could be other than the build sheet? Did the plants put any other paper on top of the gas tank? I'm dropping the tank tomorrow as I'm 90% sure this is the build sheet. Thanks--Troy
  13. I have a '70 Monte SS Flint built, no build sheet. I have not heard of anyone having a Flint build sheet, to my knowledge they just didn't exist. Troy
  14. I hate to take the seat upholstery apart as the interior is so nice and I have no background in taking seat covers off and reupholstering them. I'm banking on the gas tank, fingers crossed. Troy
  15. Tried to find the build sheet from an SS I recently bought (Van Nuys SS). Looked under the seats both front/back, console, under the dash pad, under the carpet, took door panels off, took off the plastic backs of the bucket seats and found nothing..BOOOOOO!!! Going to look in headliner when we switch that out at the upholstery shop and will drop the gas tank next week. Still have hope, but not looking good. Troy
  16. I've never gone to the Skips Show/Swap but it looks nice. Troy
  17. Whooops...just noticed the thread is Z20 confirmation...didn't mean to hijack the thread...my bad... Troy
  18. I go to the Jefferson swap meet every spring/fall...is there any special areas that have Monte items? I usually go with my brother, cousin, and friend. Thanks--Troy
  19. I could be wrong but I think it breaks down like this per my Chevy Book By The Numbers: CKD = 2.73:1 gear ratio B = Buffalo, NY (build plant) 0318 = 03-March (3rd Month) 18 - 18th (day of month) Not sure what the 1 is for after the B. Maybe someone will chime in. Troy
  20. Another thread hijacked But since everyone is chiming in, everyone will have their reasons for their best first gen MC. It depends on why you like a certain year: HP, exterior, interior, etc. I'm partial to the '70 and I like it best, but overall all first gens are great!!! I would take any of them. Troy
  21. Not what I did to my Monte but looked at 2 Monte's for a club member. Felt like Wayne Carini on Chasing Classic Cars...ok maybe not quite like him...maybe a mini-me of him, but anytime you have an opportunity to look at a '70 SS Monte and a 350 '70 Monte locked up in a warehouse, it's a good day. Troy
  22. Those look awesome...hope they fit as good as they look...going to do my interior this summer...I guess Legendary is the ticket for parts. Troy
  23. Rooster...Sam(Bones)hit it right on with his info. As far as replacing the motor...it's quite possible maybe even obvious, the original '70 402 motor had issues and was replaced. Whoever replaced it felt that another Monte 402 needed to be installed even if it wasn't a '70. Happens more often than we probably think. My brother had a '70 Monte 350/300hp bought from California sight unseen. The previous owner stated it was all matching numbers and once delivered to his home we found out the engine was actually from a '70 Camaro. It happens. Knowing the information you've provided I'd say it's not the original engine and was replaced (for whatever reason) but still a great car. Troy
  24. I think I'll pass on the blank one, thanks Bob Troy
