  1. Thank you everyone for your thoughts. Yes, it comes down to what someone is willing to pay!! I see MC prices all over the spectrum from auctions and other places. Most are not Big Block or Custom package or paperwork so that was why I was inquiring. Spoke with Hagerty and I would have to get a power of attorney and notarized paperwork along with sending in my original Title. Not to comfortable with sending off the title. May just try doing some self advertising to see the interest level.

  2. Hello fellow club members,

I have been down sizing my classic cars and now thinking about selling my Monte Carlo. I don't seem to have the time to enjoy it.

I reached out to Hagerty Auctions and they came back with a reserve price they suggested. So I wanted to ask here your input from the ones that know best about 1st Gen MC!!

Mine is the 1972 "Custom" version with the original matching numbers 454BB & tranny. Have the original build sheet and a reproduced copy of the window sticker made from the build sheet. Other print material as well. The car is white and had one repaint years ago from the original owner but still shows very well. Original vinyl black top. It is in great shape but does have some shrinking on the back corners and sides. Has a day two 8-track player/radio from the 1970s but currently no working I bought the MC from the original family who's grandfather worked for Chevrolet and ordered the car. The Monte has power drivers seat, power locks and hand crank windows. Everything works including all lights. Only thing not working is the AC. Blower works but blowing warm. Currently has new Cragar SS rims and have the original rims along with trim rings and caps. The car has just over 140,000 miles but engine has around 500 miles. Trans was gone through. Has not been driven much with the hot rainy weather of Florida. I refuse to get it wet. Used for car shows where the car has won multiple awards. Rarely see a Monte Carlo and especially a '72 Custom 454 Big Block!!

    Items replaced:

Engine Bay: hood insulation, inner wheel wells, aluminum radiator (have original), clutch fan, GM hoses, clamps, wiring harness, motor rebuilt with original crank (polished), roller rockers and mild cam, motor mounts, heater box, battery & Retro Delco cover, cowl vent covers, brake booster, master cylinder, brake system, AC converted

Exterior: Front & back bumpers, hood ornament, grill ornament, wheel well trim, rims, window tint

Underside: Sway bar bushings, exhaust system, Correct Exhaust tips, chrome differential cover, rear adjustable air shocks

Interior: Black bucket seat covers, new foam and lower springs on driver side (original rear seat), Chrome seat trim, arm rest chrome, kick plates, Quarts clock, dash bulbs, circuit board, dome light, rear view mirror, package tray, Monte Carlo script floor mattes, weather stripping on doors, window cranks. Currently has updated headliner in perfect condition but have a new original style headliner and bows.

Trunk: New weather stripping, floor matte, jack, spare BFG tire.

Extras to go with car: Headliner, Bows, NOE bumper guards in box special for the 454 model. rims, extra BFG tire, rings, caps, original radiator, extra power seat motor, chrome seat corner covers, new body mounts in box, original differential cover, Build sheet, copy of window sticker, binder with brochures, some receipts.

Side Notes:  Monte has been kept in an Climate controlled garage. Has two small rust holes the size of a quarter behind the rear wheels. The AC system was updated but has not been charged up. (I also still have R-12). The original owner as I mentioned worked for Chevrolet and custom ordered this MC. He went with the four spoke steering wheel and had them put on a 1972 Corvette air cleaner cover. The grandson (who I purchased it from) worked with NASCAR and told me about multiple drivers had driven the car including Dale Earnhardt. He never thought to take any photos which would had been great to have now. The other odd thing is the trunk key emblem is original to the car but they must of had left over ones when on the assembly line because it has the greek 1971 numbers on it.

I appreciate your time to read my novel. Just trying to get an idea what you think the value of my Monte Carlo is worth? I want to be fair and I know what I have into it but don't want to give it away!! I have attached a YouTube of my car. Note: it was taken before the new bucket seat covers were installed.

    Thank you for your time!!

    Kind regards, Jeff

  3. Thanks again everyone!! I just ordered a temp gun just to really know if my original 51 yr old gauge is accurate. That along with a clutch fan and 7 blade fan, hopefully she will run cooler. Will replace the clamps as well. Was trying to keep the Monte looking original as possible. I'm the second owner and the car is in great shape. Once the temperature issue is resolved, I'll have the AC charged and hope she still runs cool. I did purchase a black radiator catch bottle that will install. I know its not original equipment but hopefully it helps. Its Florida weather...

Again, I was suggested by other car guys at shows that I should change the radiator cap that came with the aluminum radiator to go with less pounds like 12 vs the 1.1 bar (believe it to be 16 pounds) cap that is currently on it. Anymore thoughts to that?

    Thank you

  4. Thank you for your feedback. There currently is a 1 1/2" fan spacer on the car so at this point, the fan does stick slightly outside the shroud. Currently there is no clutch fan on the car. Not sure if it got lost along the way or what. Its also a 5 blade. I did see a 7 blade fan with Clutch fan assembly at ss396.com for the Monte Carlo. Its the original 454 but was just rebuilt and has a mild cam so not sure if that also is making it run hot? what temp should it be at? I put in a 162 degree thermostat. The water has been leaking out of the top radiator hose at the radiator and not water seems to be coming out of the over flow hose at this point. I also got a new water pump but perhaps its faulty, not sure. I do know I need to change the old style clamps for the new style. I will look into your part suggestions. Thank You!!

  5. Hello Everyone,

A little background, I recently got my 1972 MC matching numbers 454BB rebuilt and back in the car. I had a new aluminum radiator installed. It has a 16 pound cap. Was going to get a lower pound cap. I also at this point do not have a clutch fan. The car is running around 200 and hotter when sitting.

I have the original style clamps but the bottom radiator hose blew off so I am also assuming the clamps are not the quality as the originals. I want to order a clutch fan along with a seven blade fan. Do I need a fan spacer since at this point the fan sticks out slightly from the shroud? It is an A/C car but have not added freon to run it at this point. I want to get the car to run cooler. Living in Florida with the heat doesn't help.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Here is a link of my car as of now:

  6. Hello All,

I have an oddity with my 1972 Monte Carlo. Bought it off the original owner and all is original condition when I purchased it.

My question is: I am wanting to find out when my car was built? Month & year? Is their any way of finding this out?

I have the original build sheet (95%) of it. Is it indicated on it and if so, where would I find it?

My main reason is I have a 1972 MC Custom 454 but it has a 1971 trunk lid emblem with the Roman numbers. I was thinking if my car was built late 1971, that might explain it. No indication that it was ever replaced. The MC has various items the original owner said they ordered like the big block 454, Custom package, power locks but hand crank windows. Non-tilt wheel but tilt wheel steering wheel, console car, etc. Rambling here... Just curious if a build date is somewhere to be found?

Thanks for any assistance with my question!!

  7. I just wanted to THANK everyone for the advice and support. I had a 1978 Monte during college but this is my first "FirstGen" Monte. Learning as I go. Its not perfect but I am trying to make it as well as I can!! Entered two car shows and took home "Best In Class" trophies each time. So that has been fun and worth while.

Thanks again and I'm sure I will be reaching out for more of your knowledge!!IMG_1961.thumb.jpeg.10b84e57c49a4408067e6d592877df6f.jpeg

  8. James,

I really appreciate your kind offer. I too am excited for the Super Bowl and being a Bucs fan. Let’s plan after the Super Bowl. I do work M-F but I maybe able to take a weekday off or we can plan a weekend day. I want to work around what is good for you. Perhaps I should pull the trigger and order a new quarts clock and know it will be a one time thing. Thank you again and I’ll will be in touch. Hope you have a great week!!

  9. Hello Dennis,

Thank you for the information. I was online seeing if I could locate a new one but haven’t seen one of that shape. I heard something hit under the car when I was driving it which I assume was the passenger side one. Been working on and having work done to the car so not surprised they became loose and fell out. I will share the photos with my Mechnic and hopefully fix the issue. Thank you!!

  10. Hello,

Can anyone tell me what this rubber piece is? Found it sitting on the floor, driver side just behind the front tire in my garage. Finding it there seems to show it came off my 1972 MC Custom 454. I assume a bushing but not sure where or what. Would like to order new one(s) but need to identify it first. Thank You for any help!!!

  11. Hello club members,

My drivers power seat on my 1972 MC has stopped working. I want to start with the fuse box but not sure which one controls the seat. Can anyone tell me which one that would be and/or have had this issue and what I can do? The seat is stuck so close to the dash that it is difficult to even drive. I have pulled the seat out of the car at this point.
Thank you for any advice you can provide.

  12. Hello again.

I am a new member and asked about rim sizes and already got responses and I thank you for the information. Recently I recently purchased my first 1st generation model. I have a 1972 Monte Carlo “Custom”. I want to learn more about this model and wondering if information is available? Still learning my way around this site. I bought it from the original family. I have “most” of the build sheet and slowly trying to read it properly. The original family ordered the custom option package with the 454 big block. I am cleaning it up at the moment and going to have it gone through and get the leaks, unconnected wires, carb adjustment and all fluids changed and take care of and the brakes. Soon I will post photos. Any suggestions or where I can find out more about my custom model would be great. Thank again!!

  13. Hello everyone,

I just joined the club after recently purchasing my first generation 1972 Monte Carlo Custom. Doing some detail work then I’ll post some photos to the site. I want to add classic Cragar rims to the car. Would like deeper looking rims for the back which brings me to my question, what size rims with BF Goodrich tires will fit the car?
    Thank you for any help!!
