  1. How do I know my 1972 Monte Carlo is a Custom or not?
  2. I have been searching for a 1972 Monte Carlo for about 15 years, one that I could afford. I have owned a 1972 Monte Carlo, green on green on green, from back in the mid ‘70’s while in the U.S. Army. Traded it for a ‘72 Chevrolet stepside (still have it). Also owned a ‘70 ‘73, ‘74, (These cars were raced in NASCAR racing, and a ‘79 Monte Carlo. In the meantime, Long story short, I found one after a long search in Oregon, that I was able To trade a ‘66 Biscayne for, one that was given to me, for the Monte. The Monte Carlo is a 1972, originally came with a 402. The previous owner removed the 402 and put in a 350. He passed away before finishing the install. I’m retired, living off of Social Security, so repairs/restore will be slow and limited. Besides the 402, of which I understand is one of 9,000 with that engine installed during assembly at the factory, the car Also came with the TH400 trans (required for a big block), 12 bolt non posi rear axle, rear air shocks which appear to also be factory installed. (NO rear sway bar, or boxed trailing arms), tilt steering column, cruise control, black Astro bucket seat interior, Remote rear view mirror, black vinyl top, rally wheels, all finished off with Cream Yellow paint. The car coming from Western Oregon (Eugene area), has lots of rust in the interior. Vinyl top rotted off. Roof has pin holes in it from the wet weather getting in underneath the vinyl top. I found a used top to replace it. The sail panels need cancer repair as well. I Purchased from OPGI the panel between the lower rear window and trunk lid due to cancer, trunk lid is not rusted, but the lock assembly is missing and the hole for it is worn to the point the lid will need to also be replaced. Also purchased new carpet and rear floor panels that rotted out due to rain. I think the engine is seized due to the heavy humidity and the engine not being properly prepped for storage. I know Based upon the cowl tag and vin number, the car was built at the Van Nyes (wrong spelling) Calif plant. Came with the 402 (letter “U” in vin), yellow Paint, A51 black bucket seats, manufactured January 3rd week. What I don’t know is the other numbers on the bottom line of cowl tag: 798149 240367 ? On The first line I don’t know what the letter “L” Means. Any help or information, rarity, etc is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Mike.

    body tag

Here is a photo of my cowl tag. Need help decoding it. I know the A51 is Astro bucket seats. I know the color is cream yellow. I also know from the vin number having the letter “U” that it came with a 402. The car also came with tilt column, cruise control, 12 bolt non posi, a/c, vinyl top (black), Rally wheels, Black interior. The car has air shocks. Any way to determine if it came from the factory that way? I’m new to MC club. Any assistance thank you.
