  1. You're right. I got the first pair of '70 door panels they made and they were actually a cloth-like fabric where the originals are vinyl. I compared them when I noticed it, buy they fabric is a very close match to the vinyl. They fit so poorly that I couldn't even close the doors, and the heat seams on the vertical pleats were coming loose. I called and complained (with photos) and they had them picked up for the return. I offered to loan them my original panels to use for a pattern, which were in pretty good shape, other than being faded. They also paid for the shipping on them. My car has power locks and windows. When I got the replacements and the originals back, I checked the new panels and they fit well. I didn't open the box with the original panels until 5 or 6 months later, when I needed to take the stainless steel pieces off for the new panels. That's when I found that they only gave me back my passenger side. I assumed they wanted and kept the driver side because it gave them the locations for the lock and window switches. I should have called them and blasted them for stealing my door panel, but time had passed and I didn't. Dan
  2. A wire wheel on a 4 ½" hand grinder will clean it up. If I had it, I'd do that and whatever else needed to clean up the backside and paint it silver. Good to go. Dan

  6. The partial VIN that is stamped on the deck is missing the first 3 characters. It should start with 1 for the Chevrolet division of GM, then a 0 for 1970, then an F for the Flint assembly plant. The 6 digits of the sequential serial number would follow. Dan

  8. That's a shame. The carburetor return springs were possibly installed wrong and they went over center. I did that on my '57 Chevy in high school. The pedal stuck to the floor, but I shut it off fast. Lesson learned with no damage done. Dan

  11. Both of those Jegs part numbers are for "special moulding". That tells me they only fit the B85 option, which is the Beltline Reveal Moulding. It's the wide stainless steel moulding option that most Montes did not come with. Dan
  12. The regular production option code is B85 and the description is Beltline Reveal Moulding. If you need to replace the rubber on them, suppliers often just refer to it as "special moulding". They were an option all 3 years. Dan

  14. I used the great information that's in the 1970 service manual to make the tool to do the job safely. A steel bar with a groove ground into it on one end, a wedge cut from a wooden 2x6, and a floor jack worked great! I added the cable hoist to make it easier to line up the bolts during the installation. Dan

  17. I take the center off the base and wash, then degrease. Masking tape and a razor blade. It's tedious work, but they come out great. Dan

  20. Thanks. What does the special provision for oil cooling consist of? I only took these 2 photos while I had the engine apart. The original owner that built this engine was a racer. He regularly raced a V8 Vega, but I know he raced my car at least once. A time slip was found in the console glove box. Dan

  23. No. Mine is 3963512, CPD, cast in late '69, installed in an early '71 model at the Leed's plant in KC. Not original to my car. The original owner lived in KC and was a drag racer. He's the one that put this engine in my car. Dan
  24. My 454 block is code CPD, which is a '71 LS5. It's also a 4 bolt main block and it has a forged steel crankshaft. Some LS5s are 4 bolt. Dan
