  1. He was a really good person, and a good person to "talk" to here...no wonder he was on my mind lately...I had forgotten it was right before the meet...I'm glad people who knew him are still here....you know we have a strong club when so many of us have been members so long and the turnover is so low that many of us knew him
  2. I have been thinking about George lately, and wondered if anyone's been in contact with his family in awhile....
  3. Someone has a quartz rebuild kit available. I saw it in Hemmings Muscle news, but can't put my hands on the article right now. It was a company specializing in converting and rebuilding car clocks. They'll do it or sell you a kit. Try an internet search. If I find it I'll repost.
  4. I've been out of the loop for a long time. Time does get away from us, then when we find the time to return to the board, it's amazing the changes it has gone through. It will be quite a change to not have George around. I think he read every new posting, and if he could offer any advice or even just a word of sympathy, he did. My heart goes out to his friends and family, and I hope that his daughter can find someone who will love his car as much as he did to take care of it and finish any minor touches he didn't get to for him. Give his daughter our love, sympathy and understanding. Let her know he effected a lot of people across the country and that we'll miss him dearly.
  5. I second (or third, or fourth) the motion! Having been out of the loop myself, and coming back to this, it was quite a shocker, but basically, sometimes in life you have to prioritize. Putting your family before a bunch of car-enthusiasts, and a club that has exploded from the 100 maybe members that were here when I joined to over 300 or more, is admirable. Thanks for everything you have done Kevin, I'm sure Pete will keep the torch glowing bright!
  6. The SS Red Book calls it "Bright Trim" in 1971, so I think some years and models were painted and some weren't. You can debate the same over the bottom of the door sill being black or body color too, some seem to have been, some weren't. I think it's a matter of taste and tolerance at this point. ------------------ Charles and Celeste (but usually Celeste) oh...and Monte the 1971 Monte Carlo 350 and under as much "frame off restoration" as an F-Body can get, Big Bird the 1976 FireBird Esprit 350!
  7. Yep! We've had to do it twice, unfortunately, so be careful who does it. The very first time, we blew the AC clutch shortly after. Grabbed a compressor out of a cabinet in my Father-in-law's shop, tried again with same person. Made horrendous noises for about 1 month, then pouf. Finally, we got smart. An HVAC guy joined our car club. His father restores Big Block Vettes. We grabbed a junkyard compressor again, and let it drain on it's face for about 1 week. Todd then vacuumed it out again just to be sure, attached it, and charged the system. It's been fantastic! It's quiet and cold. We believe that the first guy (who owns a shop) hurried it and didn't drain everything before starting. Todd, knowing what he's doing and having the time to do it, was far more careful. All we did was pick up a charging kit at Pep Boys, and he did the rest. The first guy had charged us an arm and a leg for shoddy work. The guy who referred us, another Vette restorer, has since left him as well. It can be done, and it's great to have, but be very very careful. ------------------ Charles and Celeste (but usually Celeste) oh...and Monte the 1971 Monte Carlo 350 and under as much "frame off restoration" as an F-Body can get (including a box of sheet metal sitting in my dining room), Big Bird the 1976 FireBird Esprit 350!
  8. There's a sample of it on the web site you listed, but it's unavailable right now. However, since you all warned me it's Country, forget it...yuck! ------------------ Charles and Celeste (but usually Celeste) oh...and Monte the 1971 Monte Carlo 350 and...coming soon....to a show near you...Big Bird the 1976 FireBird Esprit 350!
  9. The woman who put our top on said that in terms of not building up like a lot of store-bought shine treatments, baby oil, or even better, fragrance-free mineral oil is the best. A lot of places swear by their own products, but I guess I tend to trust the folks that see more vinyl tops per day than any of us do. Our top has been on for about 3 years, and was out in the elements for most of that time, but still looks brand-new. (It did have a cloth cover on it, but still...) ------------------ Charles and Celeste (but usually Celeste) oh...and Monte the 1971 Monte Carlo 350
  10. Mine worked when I got it, but seemed to die about the time I started losing my lighter and right turn signal indicator. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. my wiring's in ok shape, but who knows for sure what lurks back there. I bet if you sat down with a phone book and called some of your seedier electronic repair places, they might be able to fix a clock. For heaven's sake, clocks from the 70s aren't that complicated!
  11. I used the Red Book for SS Chevys on mine. It worked pretty well. Some things not listed (like the window antenna) in the MC section were in the Impala section. I have also used the ID Number guide for Chevelles and ElCaminos. Basically, for the most part, 1971 codes are universal. In terms of the cracking, I used this decoupage stuff I found in a craft store to glue mine back together and attach it to a piece of cardboard. There's a popular brand called Mod Podge, and some others. They are very similar to the stuff you glue jigsaw puzzles together with. Using the numbers in the corner and a ruler, I managed to reassemble all of the pieces that had a line or number on it, with the exception of the pieces still stuck under the spring. Good luck! I hope you like puzzles! (Perhaps I should start a build sheet restoration business) ------------------ Charles and Celeste (but usually Celeste) [This message has been edited by CnCsMC (edited 08-02-2001).]
  12. I find it interesting that a few of you found it in the seat back plastic - hmmmm. Ours is in good shape, but if there's one there, it would be nice to have one intact still in the car. ------------------ Charles and Celeste
