Need some advise regarding Horn Contact

Hi Guys. I installed a Grant steering wheel the other day which was easy but just noticed that the Horn is not working because of some missing hardware. At least I have found out that my Monte lacks the original Horn contact spring, pin and retainer, but I'm not sure if anything else is needed. So if someone has repaired his own horn contact please help.

In a video I saw a description how to install such a kit (ebay link) but the white plastic ring with the intake for pin and spring is also missing on my Monte. Is this the real setup for a Monte or does it look different?

It's confusing. smile I have all parts but not the following mentioned ones:

 

- plastic horn housing (I'm not even sure how this should fit because I can't see any space where this could fit my current setup)

- spring

- plastic sleeve

Thanks Scott and Sam. I have ordered both parts and once these arrive in good ol Germany I'll let you know if the most important part on my Monte is working again... wink

So now I've got all the parts but I'm not getting the small ring pulled off from the steering rod. Is there any trick or special tool necessary? I've tried a Circlip Plier but had no chance to get in between the small gap.

You will need a lock plate compression tool to get the lock plate retaining ring off. It attaches to the steering shaft and presses down on the lock plate allowing access to remove the ring.

Hi guys. Hope you're doing well.

 

I got the horn contact cam installed finally but I'm currently lost in understanding in how the horn really works. I thought that when connecting the inner cable temporary to the housing of the steering column the horn should bell. But all I got is a clicking noice from the engine bay and some smoke on the cable which probably means there's a short-circuit fault. So either I'm wrong in how I understand the theoretical function of a horn or there is something wrong with the electrical connections in my Monte.

 

I'd like to hear some thoughts. smile Oh by the way, the horn itself is working.

Joerg,

 

First, the horn relay/system was not designed to stay energized for long periods of time. It’s a momentary system that is designed to see on - off - on - off use. If you hold the wire to a chassis ground too long it will create a high resistance and start getting hot. This is most likely where the smoke came from.

 

If the relay is clicking it tells me the ground circuit is making contact to the relay. If you do not get the horn to sound you need to check the wire from the relay to the horn. It’s a 14 gauge dark green wire (circuit 29) connected to the relay. Using a test lamp connect the wire to the lamp and to ground and have a helper touch the horn ground wire (circuit 28) to the steering column to ground it for an instant. If it lights the horn is bad or not grounded well. If it doesn’t, check if you have power at the relay when the horn ground wire is touched to the steering column.

 

To test your horn touch the connector on the horn with a jumper wire directly from the battery's positive side.

I think that the smoke came from being too fainthearted trying to touch the housing with the cable. You know I don't wanna burn the car down only because I want to get the horn working... wink I tried today again with more confidence and there was no smoke anymore and the relais was clicking whenever a short connection was there. So I think there must be something wrong between the relais and the horn. The horn is working when connecting directly to the battery. I guess it will take some time and so I will probably do the checks on the weekend.

I checked the relais today and guess what there was a short with the outgoing positive and negative cables. A little bending and now the horn is working finally. Thanks again and have a great Sunday.
