My Monte currently has the original clock. If I were to replace it with a tach do i need to replace the printed circuit as well?

If you're putting in a stock tach the printed board will not work since the clock and tach have differant electrical needs. maybe you can by-pass the board and hard wire the tach directly shouldn't be difficult.

If you are tring to keep the original look, I believe that the factory tach should go in the spot where the gas gauge is.

Yup - the clock stays. And the "idiot lights" in the small round recesses are replaced with gauges - with the bottom righthand one becoming the gas gauge. wink

There are clock to tach conversion kits out there...

check this company out (I have never ordered anything from them so i don't endorse):

If you purchase, please post how the installation went. Thanks.

Has anyone ever installed one of these conversions? How did it work out? And are these only for SS? or will my non-SS be workable with this? ( I don't see why it couldn't )

72GM, There is a web site with instructions to install 1st Gen factory gauges without the gauge printed circuit. I'll be doing this on a non-SS, installing tach in clock's position. Will keep large gas gauge and have an oil pressure gauge in small gas gauge location. Of course, I've misplaced/lost URL. Certain it's under something with Chevelle in name. Ed

Green, the previous owner of my 72 took out the clock and put an autogage tach in it's place. It looks pretty good. Holler if you want pics of it. Unfortunetely, I dont know what he went through converting it.

They are not only for SS cars. The factory "Special Instrumentation" package that included the tach and gauges was optional on all FGMCs - sport coupes as well as SS cars (it was not included as part of the SS package). This was the case with '70-'72 Chevelles, too.
