72 Monte under-hood wire identification help

72 Monte Carlo

Recommended Posts

When I got my 72 MC 2 yrs ago, it was missing the engine and radiator. I’m trying to finish some under-hood wiring before finishing up what little body work is left to do before giving the car body an etching primer coat base on the bare metal.

Here the wires I need to know where they go;

Hey Doug, I dont know what wires you need to know of we might need to see the ends

1st pic:  Black wire that has the conn goes to underhood light.

2nd pic: black with boot looks like heater ground, and tan looks idle solenoid

3rd pic: a/c

4th pic: if the black wire goes to the green wire conn its the ground for the a/c

5th pic: a/c

6th pic: it could be to the head temp gauge?

My car is a '72 also but it has a BB so harness is different, but start there. Someone else can chime in and help you out, maybe some better pics can help more. Good Luck

Here are some pics of the terminals.

1st pic - the brown wire. Is that for the idle control solenoid on the Quadrajet carb?

2nd pic - Is the connector for the A/C compressor? It has a ground eye on the end.

3rd pic - black wire with a round female pin connector. Is that one for the brake proportioning valve? I have a brown wire with a round style female pin connector on the proportioning valve right now, so where does that one go?

4th pic - Looks like a dark green or blue wire that I think went to the temp sensor on the head?

Down at my mini high torque starter, I have the purple exciter wire going to the solenoid. There’s a red wire going to the solenoid also.

Hanging down is a yellow looking wire and a black wire. Are these two wires something that the previous owner added or were they there from the factory?

Not sure if the 72 is the same as 70 but the wiring diagram on the 70 showed a yellow wire from the positive terminal from the coil to the "R" on the starter solenoid. I don't have a 72 wiring diagram

I could be wrong because my colors are different but,

1) yes

2) yes

3) mine is brown also. black?

4) to me it looks like the ground for the heater

show some more pics of where #3 goes so we can see better, also show pics of the heater wires you should have a hot and a ground, that #4 looks to be the ground.

Next pic 2 wires might go to the Tcs on tranny?

This is what i have all in the same connector.

and this one is for the idle solenoid,

The yellow wire at the starter runs from the coil to the starter. If you have a mini starter you only have one post on the starter. It looks like you have an hei so this wire would not need to be used if you getting 12v power for the distributor from another source.

Since the idiot light temperature sensor has two wires from the factory - Green, and Green/White, how do you wire it for a gauge style single spade temp sensor that only needs one wire going to it?

Where's the best spot to wire up an electric choke?

Thanks!

I wired my electric choke directly to the fuse block under the dash. All you need is switched ignition voltage. Since nobody is answering your question about a 2 into 1 temp sensor lead why not read continuity from the plug on the gauge to the wires on the two pronged temp sender plug and see which lead goes to the gauge? I have an idiot light car with aftermarket gauges so I cannot tell you from personal experience. I can say that my plug like yours, the 90 degree female blade plug depicted in those pics, is unused and just lying around in my engine bay.
