smokinquack
Over the winter it leaked out a large pool, dripping off the u-joint. Put in a new output seal last year and the outside of the shaft is dry. Appears to be running through the shaft and out the u-joint. There is what looks like a grease zerk down in the shaft?? Anyone familiar with this?
MC1of80
It's coming out of the driveshaft yolk. In the center. There is most likely a small hole. It's very common.
smokinquack
So I did a little research and sounds like that is a weep hole in the yoke. There is an o-ring on the output shaft that rides in the smooth area of the yoke right before the splines. Seems like the fluid level sits pretty high to come out that weep hole when just sitting.
MC1of80
So what happens when the car sits, any car with an automatic transmission, is the fluid in the torque converter drains back into the transmission. Fluid naturally seeks to be level. That's why when some cars sit, they tend to leak. The little hole is to relieve air pressure when the yoke goes in and out of the transmission tailshaft over bumps. Only transmission tailshaft a that have the o-ring inside should have this hole. I recommend replacing the o-ring with a new pliable one or replacing the yoke with one without a hole. Just remember if you do, to remove the o-ring completely.
