My 71 SS restoration project

It certainly does take huge amounts of time, but it all equals forward progress. Keep up the good work Dennis!

Did you consider masking off that sticker real carefully & spraying a light coat on that part of the motor. Either a low stick masking tape (3M purple I think, at Home Depot), or even a light coat of grease, carefully applied to the sticker so there's no chance of damage from tape pulling it off?

I did a real small part of it. Just put on tape and took right back off and it was pulling the ink. It’s barely legible as is so over time it will fade away then I’ll do it.

Cleaned up my bumpers today and a little polishing. They are 13 footers. I found a nos rear one in Denver Free. I just have to go get it. My brother has one “in stock “. He won’t ship it. He’s using it as bait to get me to go and visit

Not bad. Like I said 13 footers. Front looks like an 8 or 9. Rear has a few little dings and a few gouges. But not good enough for being such a visual part of the car. It’s those parts that nobody really looks at but everyone sees.

Hey Dennis, They look great but agree, no one looks at but everyone sees.  When going to your brothers make sure you bring something to drink, his favorite. If he has something else he will call you again!!!!  LOL

Yea my front one don't look to bad but rear has some oxidation,  not to bad to naked eye from 15 feet but when someone is behind with lights on it has a reddish tinted to it. I'll get around to it sometime.

So I ordered a license light lens, front turn signals, emission sticker for the radiator plate and ss bumper strip from the parts place. Received all of it it a 24x24x4 inch box. Needless to say I was a little afraid to open the box knowing that there was a 5 ft rubber strip in it. I thought what kind of junk strip did I get for 400 bucks. Very pleasantly surprised. The strip is impregnated with the metal strap with the bolts and coiled very nice. And it fit like a glove and it said “made in USA “on it. And all the lenses looked awesome with the correct date codes. Then I looked at the emission sticker, I figured what the heck for 5 bucks. Correct au code and looked great, matched the build sheet. Expensive day but good day.

Drove 600 miles today chasing parts. Here’s what I got.

71 Monte Carlo blue console, shifter and cable (needs lense and burlwood sticker)

chevelle dash casing (radio knobs cut and metal bracket in back plastic broken where it bolts on)

dash pads both bad

rear defroster ( cracked grill) and switch

and I went to the other side of Cleveland and picked up 4 nos “ss” emblems for the front fender on my 70 chevelle

good day 400 bucks (100 for the dang emblems) and 27 dollars in gas.

So out of my 300 dollar trip to Akron. Got these done today. More parts to go in the bedroom. Lol. Question on the console. Is that supposed to be silver under the p-r-n-d plate. It doesn’t look right or good. Help. It does look ok in the picture though????

That defroster grill came out real nice, especially if it's the cracked one in the prior pics.

On the console, mine had a black piece of vinyl or something in there, but it was bad. I made one out of heavy paper & sprayed it with trim black paint. The light for the shift pattern should come from the ends, sort of like the HVAC control. The black sheet covers everything that you see thru that window, at least on mine. Some places will sell you the whole assembly, but all I needed was the black part. Plus a lot of them were repros, past experience had proven that a lot of that stuff just isn't as good as OEM.

EDIT: Tom beat me to it, as I was typing, lol

That’s not the same grill but I did fix the broken grill also and it turned out nice

My Gardner exhaust should be here tomorrow. That’s all I got for updates. But since I don’t have any engine what good is it (venting). And who knew Upolstry material was so dang(not what I wanted to type)expensive. 159/yd for cloth(6yards) and 79/yd for vinyl (4 yards) holy crap 💩. This car is killing me, well breaking me anyway.

Can't wait to see your exhaust. Have you talked to the engine builder? Hopefully he will give you some good news on that front. Unbelievable about the cost of the material! Your build is looking real good keep going.  😎

Got the exhaust today. You talk about nice packing job. It dang near filled up a 55 gallon trash can with packing material. They put a cool Gardner drinking glass in the box too. I put it on but of course it is not set properly but you get the idea. A motor would sure help with alignment. Lol 😂 (again venting)
