Paint job now 34 years old

Wow, time does go by quickly. 34 years ago I picked up my Monte from a backyard garage painter. I still needed to take it back for the final buff. DuPont Lacquer single stage. I think I paid about $400.00 labor. The paint was free since I worked at DuPont Automotive Finishes. Good times!

Hey Bruce she looked great then, and you have her looking sweet now after all those years. But i bet that Christmas tree in the background is not that small anymore...

Willie, thank you!

That was our neighbors and I bet it's long gone.

I should take a picture today but the current owners may get upset, better not.

What a great price for a paint job. Didn't Earl Schibe(not spelled correctly) have a paint job back in the day for something like 99.95. I also like the Chevette in one picture and the Beauville van. What's in the garage?? A Cavalier ??  Glad you still have it

I remember when you could get and Earl Schibe paint job for $29.95 if you called in the next five minutes. Right after that another commercial came on advertising a used car lot "The King Don't Care". He was so crooked that they made a state law in Indiana banning Sunday car sales.

My first car was a ‘67 Camaro that my dad bought for Mom used in ‘68. It was turquoise with a black vinyl top.... that is until Dad sent it to Earl Scheib in ‘75 or so for a repaint while Mom drove us kids down to Florida on a family trip.  Not sure why, but Dad had it painted white and be got his full $29.95 worth... not only did they not remove the sill plates, there was even overspray on the corner of the rear seat on the drivers side.

Mom drove their car until ‘78 when it was put in my grandfathers garage. My sister who is the oldest of us three had first crack at it and see, thankfully, wanted nothing to do with it. I was next in line and chomping at the bit to get their car in the summer of ‘87 when I was a ready to start senior year in high school. A few thousand dollars I had saved from little part-time jobs was quickly depleted:  Dad and Uncle Ron (a Ford mechanic) pulled the motor and trans, disassembled the motor and sent it out to a machine shop while a coworker of my uncle rebuilt the PG in his garage.

A few weeks later the block and all the new parts came back and I watched in amazement as my dad and uncle put that motor together in about two hours. I got to help spray paint the block, heads and water pump Chevy orange.

I must’ve put 5000 miles on that car just driving around the neighborhood over the summer I turned 17.  It was a daily driver for four years, Chicago winters and all. Good times. I wish I can go back to those times if even for a few days. Going to have to see if I can find some pictures of their car, will share them when I do.
