Guest JCarlton21 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 what would be a good MSD to get for my 1970 350 Monte? We sell them at the car accessorie place I work at but in our books there is about 10 diffrent ones and just wondering what one is the best one, and not sure a lot about them, what will it do for my monte?
Sam (Bones) Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 is the engine stock??? if it is, save your money this is a decent starter ignition http://www.jegs.com/i/MSD/121/5520/10002/-1?source=home&coll=item3&pos=3
Guest JCarlton21 Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 I actually dont know a whole lot about it, I just bought the car 2 days ago, never had a Monte before so trying to learn as much as possible, basically all I know is it's a 350 rebuilt, tons of chrome and its got 600 miles on the rebuild are the other ones better, kinda wana know the pro's and con's of the one you recomended compared to the other ones for sale thanks guys
TN454Monte Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Sorry, not intending to muddy the waters here, but I was considering going with a MSD Digital 6 Plus My 454 Is out of a 1978 and has the HEI on it, I suspect it is nearing time to overhaul it, as I've had some weird stumbles from time to time, and I was thinking on the MSD digital and to replace the rest of the ignition with Blaster HVC Coil and the MSD HEI Replacement Dist. Right now the 454 is mostly stock except for headers and carb, but it is going to get a 496 stroker rebuild in the future. It's a bigger expense now, but I think down the road it will be more adaptable to future goals? Any thoughts?
Cali Z28 Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 The Digital 6 box sounds a little much for your combonation, however its a good box to grow into (I'm a big of no longer spending money twice), if cost is a big factor the 6A or 6AL would be more then enough Scott
TN454Monte Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Quote: The digital 6 is a great box if you are going to do a lot of mods, like fuel injection, crank trigger and such and it certainly is a good piece of hardware but if you are staying with a Carb and not planning to do much 1/4 pounding I would say it is overkill but as I said, I'm a fan of that Overkill? What is this Overkill of which you speak!? ***Thumbs through Greg's Dictionary of Life*** Lemme see ..Overbite, Overbore, Overhaul, Overshoot, ....Mmmnope not in there so it must not exist!!!
Sam (Bones) Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Overkill is a slang term for the use of excessive force or action that goes much further than is necessary to achieve its goal I have a programmable digital 7 part # 7530T = overkill even for my application
TN454Monte Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 LOL...Look here Mr Bones..I said "Greg's dictionary of life" Not Mr. Bones... So quit harshing my mellow dude! ROFL *This is said very much in jest...no offense intended*.
Sam (Bones) Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 that was from Wikipedia off the internet, my mistake, I forgot you said ***Thumbs through Greg's Dictionary of Life***
kc8oye Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 IF you want overkill, do the coil pack conversion!! it will only cost you about $3,000 retail :> no more distributor tho :>
TN454Monte Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 I do admit if I go with the Digital 6 set up I'm way overkill right now as the motor sits. Way I see it, I'm already pretty much past the "daily driver" for my Monte, with a 454 and 4.00 a gallon premium unleaded that's not gonna work ...so why not shoot for the moon? Being an IT type has taught me to plan down the road for the dreaded "future expansion / needs" beast, I'd rather have the ability to go to a crank trigger, etc, now then turn around and have to replace the ignition yet a second time. Besides..I'm a "geek" ANYTHING that works off of digital technology..well it's got to be good right? Yeaaaaahh Right.
kc8oye Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 lol Allan.. that's a good way to put it yes, get the 6AL you won't be disapointed!! I love mine! and I dont' really need it either.. but the engine does idle way better (smoother, quieter, more stable)
TN454Monte Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 I just pulled the trigger on a MSD Digital 6 I found on E-bay!! With shipping it was under 300.00 so I'm happy.
kc8oye Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 that doesn't seem like much of a deal for the Digital 6!? $319.50 on ebay... it's just me talkin.. but for the extra $30, you coulda had one brand new from summit.. unless u are gettin more with it.. like the msd coil or whatever.. but still that's fantastic.. it's worth having the MSD box i LOVE mine
myfirstmonte Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 How can you tell if it is a 5al 6al or 7al...One came on the MONTE when I bought it...I heard that if it is a 7al I should not use for a cruiser...I putting the 402 back in it...maybe I should look at real good might tell me on it! Just wondering... my monte
myfirstmonte Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 I look this weekend and let you know, thanks...come to think of it...I don't think it is the MSD brand...Mines is gold in color.
TN454Monte Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Quick Question: What MSD Distributor and Coil are you guys running with your MSD ignition box set ups? This Digital 6 is for replacement of an HEI 454 system.
72MC Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 With a MSD digitial 6 plus box or better, use a MSD pro billet dist P# 85551 (like bones said) and a MSD hvc blaster 2 coil.
myfirstmonte Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 Allan it is a 7AL...I'm putting the 402 back in it...mild cam...but bigger than stock. Is this too much? Will it burn something up? (like the starter)
myfirstmonte Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 thanks...I was worried about the "overkill theme" with the 6AL
