MC1of80
Hello all. Today's progress was the install of the "Chevelle" metal inner fender wells into the Monte. Driver's side bolted right in with the exception of the rear brace hole that goes from the lower firewall to the top portion of the fender. After locating and drilling a hole, all was well. The passenger side needed 2 holes besides the one for the brace to be addressed. One hole, 2nd up from the rear (by the door) needed to be "egged out" a little and the lowermost one needed a completely new hole drilled. All the other holes lined up. These are mocked up until my son decides on if he wants to pain them and if so, what color. Gloss black to match the body? Semi, the way they are now or flat. Lol The fender wells were purchased through Ground Up.
Michael Boyte
Very nice, I too preferred the metal inner fenders. We painted ours to match the car.

Rob Peters
I would let him decide. I think gloss would be easier to keep clean though. rob

MC1of80
Hello everyone! Latest update on the 496. 2 weeks ago we went to install the milled heads that we had recently picked up from the machine shop. While bolting on the 2nd head and torquing to spec, on the last torque sequence almost the last bolt we heard a loud metallic "SNAP"! Well to say our hearts stopped is an understatement. After removing the head bolts, which are ARP, new, and removing the head we found the threads in the block pulled out! Ughhhh! At that point we were done for now. After doing some research and finding out this is a common issue with big block Chevys, I have never had this issue in the 40+ years of doing this. Lol Ordered a complete helicoil kit and drill bit guide and they were delivered. Well today I decided to tackle the issue. I would like to say the operation was a success. Lol. Letting the thread locker properly dry before installing the head and checking pushrods length. Another project. Lolol 3
Michael Boyte
We too have used the helicoils , they are life savers for sure. Absolute wonderful solution !
cny first gen 71
That's probably why they use studs in them so there's less wear on the block threads. That of course is an assumption on my part.

That of course is an assumption on my part. What I have read is that the bolts in question, that this happens to are ones going into the water passages. The bolt end rusts/oxidizes and when removed, usually with a power tool, it rips the threads out. Even though we chased all the threads with a tap before installing the bolts one still "snapped" the threads out.

MC1of80
SPORT MIRROR kinda day. Lol. Getting a few sport mirrors ready for their new homes. 1 driver's side remote for a friend's 72 Chevelle SS, 1 passenger side for my son's 70 pro street to match the driver's side we already installed and 1 passenger side for Barn Find. Still have to disassemble and strip the one for the driver's side..... Shortly.

Small but forward momentum! Lol Now, back to the engine. Lol
