ignition switch removal

as stated,  the spring is in the ignition Switch  located on the column--I always move thru the positions very slowly and carefully so as to hopeiully not break or bend the little contact points in the switch itself

The key cylinder only turns the rack in the column that pulls the rod that is installed into the actual ignition switch towards the bottom of the column. 

As stated, that is more than likely the culprit. The aftermarket makes these. Just make sure you get the correct year and manufacturer. One from the same year Chevelle works also.
