Oh and yes that is a new gas tank. After sitting for over 25 years with old gas in it I decided to go ahead and just put in a brand new tank.

Rather smart move, I would say

And as promised here come some pics. Disassembly is underway and sandblasting. As always the removal of paint revealed a lot more problems that I had hoped. Apparently at some point before I bought it in 1984 it had gotten hit in the rear and there was a lot more rust than I realized but it's still fixable and will be done right. Luckily I have it at one of the best bodymen and metal workers around in Clint Morris and Morris Body Shop and Restoration in GA.

That looks rough but fixable like you said. Good pictures and good project. I have a question. What is he using for sandblasting material if the car is basically still together, other than the removable panels?  And how is he getting all the left over material out of the car? I’m asking because I am doing a 70 and something of this nature needs to be done. Thanks

No we are taking it completely off the frame and putting it on a rotisserie. Not sure which media he is using but can try to find out when I go up there in a few weeks to help get the running gear out. I'm a wrench turner and not a body man unfortunately. I think I've decided to go with a modern engine since I plan on doing some racing and want reliability instead of the big block. Talking to our engine sponsor this weekend.

Welcome Robert on becoming a new FGMCC member !!! A great story and another Monte being saved and resurrected. It’s nice to see you and your family partaking in the car culture and numerous automotive events. We are looking forward to seeing your progress and joining us at Club events.

I hope the Monte / Model A does not become a requirement Rob Peters and Robert both having that set up. Good luck on the redo on the Monte

LOL, don't think that will be a concern. I just hope the Model A isn't hiding as many surprises when I take it down. I know there is some rust in the lower cowl and the roof wood is likely going to have to be replaced (normal) as it leaks at the rear. The engine will need line boring and modern bearings put in but hopefully that's about it.

I do want to make the Eastern Meet once it's completed. I hope nobody gives me too much grief for a modern engine and the addition of SS badging on a car that was never offered as an SS.

Hey Robert, you don't have to bring your Monte to attend a meet, you'll still have a good time. And since you've thrown down the gauntlet, as Dennis said you can expect the grief either with or without your Monte 🤣

LOL Thanks guys!!!

BTW not Monte related but Lori (my wife) earned a spot in the Ultimate Street Car invitational this past weekend and I'm headed to SEMA with her to compete in her Camaro. Fewer than 100 drivers make it to that event and it is by invite only; you have to either win your way in, point in through the season, or get in with a sponsor selection. To get in by winning, you either have to win your division at a qualifier or come in right behind someone who had already won or they get the spirit of the event. She won her way in by getting the Spirit of the Event award at VIR.

VIR is not too far from me. Let me know the next time she runs there and I’ll try to come see you.

Sorry I didn't see this until today. We run all weekend and will probably be back next year. She would make runs, come in and within an hour or so be back out for more.

Congratulations to your wife on her accomplishment.  VIR is a fantastic facility, my wife and I used to go there 7 or 8 times a year. We used to have a home in Summerfield NC,  which is only about 40 minutes from Danville VA .   Also when we visit our  home on Smith Mountain lake , We try to make it to VIR as well ( less than an hour away ) . The motorcycle events are rather exciting too !

Also some of the Nascar teams come there to practice for Watkins Glen.
