1Bad_Monte
Morning, Just joined FGMC and wanted to introduce myself. My name is JR and I am a Bay Area native. I purchased a 1972 Monte Carlo a little over a year ago as a project car for my father to have fun with. He was debating retirement and after my mother passed, I wanted to make sure he had something to keep him busy. Growing up he would do body work and paint as a side gig and a hobby. Unfortunately, after stripping all the primer off our Monte, it was worth less than scrap price. I’m talking even the trunk divide was held to the body by fiberglass and glue. The previous owner sold a great story about how he drove it once a week and got it from the original owner but it became clear that he/they spent all their time covering up and fiberglassing in all the missing metalwork. It did however come with a box of original documents from the original owner that showed just how loved the car was. We couldn’t let it be treated the way she had been so our build went from just get her running and have a cruiser to rebuild and update. Though, like most projects, she’s over budget and behind schedule she will be one of a kind. She’s definitely given my pops a new passion as he has taken to the web and reached back out to old friends to dust off his skills. That to me is worth every penny 10x over. I’ve had a few Camaros and a 72 short bed so I am new to the Monte Carlo world but it has been so nice to see the community this car has created. Happy to hear and share what ever I can. -Jr Pictures 1&2: Day we picked her up (bad lean and alignment way off. Thought it was suspension but it was a sign of things we’d find) 3&4 Peek at the interior and a shot of what she looked like all covered up 5 Some of the box of documents she came with Edited November 5, 2022 by 1Bad_Monte Edited for a duplicate picture.
Andy's Auto
Pretty well optioned hot rod you got there. L48 350 gets you a 12 bolt rear. Buckets and air. I'd have to finish that one. Eyes are shot, what was the original color?
1Bad_Monte
Hey Andy, She was originally Mulsanne Blue. Cloth buckets with vinyl rear bench. Thought they were replaced but I guess you could order or buy that combo. From everything I was able to gather online and by judging the stock parts on her, believe everything else is factory as well As far as the NEW color, I wanted to go with a grey because that’s it he only way I have known her but after hours with a light gun and color catalogs, we found an awesome metallic blue that will highlight her curves and it drastically changes in the light/dark. She’s just waiting for us to finish up prepping the doors and fenders then it’s time to shoot. -Jr.

1Bad_Monte
Thanks James! Pops had a ‘66 Chevelle SS with a 396 in blue, he painted my ‘72 Fleetside blue, my sisters ‘67 Mustang blue so there’s a trend on what gets painted in his garage LOL. My 2019 SS 1LE next to Sally, my sisters ‘67.
1Bad_Monte
Everyone, Thanks for all the kind words. Not sure if I can reply directly to a comment or not but have an album full of good stuff to post up here. Would the best way be to share progress of the build in stages, i.e the purchase and what to look for, the tear down, frame restoration, body work, engine work etc….) or should I start a forum just for the car build as a whole? Thanks, -Jr.

I’ve been trying to match mulsanne blue but I can’t get the depth of color or the tone right. It’s a bit too turquoise.
1Bad_Monte
Hey Crom, I have a pic of the paint book but we picked a metallic, darker, blue.
Crom Cruach
Thanks Thomas. When I give this code to my paint supplier, they have no reference to replicate it - the lucite, centari, and dulux codes are not recognised here (Ireland). I wondered if you had a modern code for the metallic paint? It sure looks gorgeous on the paint lid! Paul
willie
Hey Paul just a heads up, My 72 W code is #26 Mulsanne blue, but when i had it painted it was much lighter than it was supposed to be from what i remember. I do have a paint chart and yes it is lighter than it should be. I happen to like the color and really didnt want the car to be repainted again so i will wait 10-15 years before i paint her again. If you like i can go ck the can for some kind of formular on the can as i still have it. Let me know? 1
1Bad_Monte
Thanks. Here is the code on the can for the metallic blue we picked. The difference with the light on and off is not as drastic as the photos imply but it does really help define the subtle body lines.
willie
Hey Tom thats the same color in different light??? What a difference!!!
Crom Cruach
Thanks again Thomas I can definitely work with an Audi code, love the color, yeah the light difference is crazy! Willie that would be great if it’s not too much hassle 👍🏻
willie
I can get it but this comp doesn't do pics so i will print it out on here or you can PM me your phone number and i can send it directly to you.
