Temp gauge

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I just finished doing an SS gauge cluster conversion on my 71 Monte, I did buy a new printed circuit board when installed, everything works great except my Temp gauge, now I think my problem is the incorrect sensor.  I have a newer GM ZZ4 crate motor 350 Horse 350 and the new motor has a smaller thread sensor and the OHMS are different, any suggestions on the right sensor to help make my temp gauge to register? Thanks in advance.

What type of 'conversion' did you do? Are they factory gauges you installed, or an aftermarket type conversion?

What is the thread on your current cylinder heads for the sensor, 3/8 NPT?

Hey Wade,

If you're using the factory original gauges, you'll have to use the original type sending units. (Has to do with the ohms being used.)

I found the correct sender at Auto Value, but make sure you get the sender that goes with the gauge and not just the "idiot light" sender.... Rheostatic vs. contact sender.

Can't remember the part number, but pretty sure it's a Dorman product.

Good hunting, Scott.

Parts Place.... p/n EL6402C or EL9834Z. are the ones you're looking for.

Probably won't work, he says the threaded hole in the cylinder head is smaller than stock (1/2 NPT)

I found this info yesterday, but haven't heard back as to what the conversion consisted of. Anyways, the info below may be useful.

This one explains why some sensors wont work and a 33 ohm resistor is needed in series to get accurate readings:

Interesting article.... But i haven't had a whole lot of luck with these electrical "fix" posts.

Read tons on how to install the correct resistance filter for factory tach using an HEI ignition. Bought the parts, built a couple versions, nothing worked. :(

There is a company associated with Holley that builds specialty electronics, but not cheaply.

Classic Instruments, they can be found on the Holley site.

Worst case, Wade could always find a thermostat housing with a 1/2" tap, or a tapped frost plug......

But I'm sure there's probably someone on here that has found the part he's looking for. ;)
