kpcsgasp Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 The time is coming for me to re-locate to the lower 48. The health insurance rates here in Alaska are very expensive. I have started to check out destinations to retire to and would like some opinions. We prefer to be on the east coast. Last summer we were touring around DC and Virginia and my wife really liked the area around Winchester. We are going out in September to look further and make our decision. We plan to move around March-June time frame. I took a liking to the Winchester as well and it has the added bonus of being so close to Carlisle. MONTE NEEDS A NEW HOME!!! 1 Quote
jft69z Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 The fact that you're considering driving distance to Carlisle, PA as part of your relocation, I'd say you have a good plan there. Congratulations! 3 Quote
Glen Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 Stay the #%*¥ outta Illinois, particularly Chicago. The following GIF nicely sums up all things Chicago… 2 2 1 1 Quote
Dtret Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 There’s a ton of great spots in the lower states. Everyone will have an opinion so be prepared. I personally prefer the middle states still have some peace. 3 Quote
cbolt Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 All will depend on what you are looking for in your retirement. What is most important to you? I love Florida because I can ride my motorcycle all year long. Plus, the Monte never gets put away for the winter. Those are my priorities. If you don't like heat, this isn't the state for you though. 3 Quote
DragCat Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 Florida is nice except for heat and hurricanes Taxes are good but home insurance is high. Virginia is nice, but property taxes on vehicles is a pricey hit. Ive had friends move to Tenn because of the taxes . As said, make a list of what's important to you, just like buying a car. Priorities and negotiables. Allow for time to recalibrate your compass, when I went from Fl to Ca the ocean was on the wrong side of everything 🤣 2 Quote
Rob Peters Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 The Winchester area is very nice. Harrisonburg is also nice, close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. My sister lives in the Raleigh, NC area. It is a nice area too. You can be in the Mountains on a couple hour drive or to the Outer Banks of NC and lounging on the beach in a couple hours. Plenty of lakes and recreational areas too. rob 2 Quote
S.Maug Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 definitely don't come to Illinois. They're are better choices, no really !!! love to have you but this state kinda sucks. Hope it was ok to say. and if i could move my farm acres I would in a heartbeat. 2 Quote
S.Maug Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 my wife is singing. maybe I'm coming to alaska 3 Quote

Hurricane wise the highest winds we have seen since moving to Florida in 1984 is 90mph, and that was Hurricane Michael. I left Pensacola before Katrina and Jacksonville before Floyd. I am biased but I really love it here in Florida. The only thing missing is mountains. 1 Quote

Now we have to go to Jersey and i think that's about 4 hours away! My Uncles used to race at Islip speedway around that time, Also at Freeport and Riverhead. 3 Quote

The same "universal" health care that kept passing me over for knee surgery until I couldn't work anymore ? The same "universal" health care that has kept me rotating through the system until my back issues will now require major surgery ? Glen, it may sound great from the outside...... But it's a very broken system that many here wind up traveling and paying out of pocket for proper treatment. 2 2 Quote

It’s all great on paper but it’s not great for the average person that has to pay the tax bill. That’s why it gets canned here. 2 Quote
Ron Tevis Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 I live in Ky. Not too bad here on insurance but there’s sales tax, property tax , beer tax, . if I had my preference now I would have moved to Tennessee years ago.. my daughter likes southern Virginia. Love those mountains in e Tennessee.. 1 Quote

While sarcasm doesn’t translate in print, ,my comment was completely tongue in cheek. And since politics is frowned upon here, I won’t even get started on all the goods and services lavished on the hundreds of thousands of “asylum-seekers“… 4 Quote
