Hello

i believe i need to replace the starter on my 71/350

when i turn the ignition switch i hear the "click" of the solenoid throwing out but no other movement.

i went to rock auto and i see many options

choices i was considering are

1)GM GENUINE 323255 Re-manufactured
Automatic transmission; DELCO SERIES 10MT Direct Drive TYPE 101 HIGH TORQUE UNIT

2) AC DELCO either used or re-manufactured

i would like to replace the entire unit with solenoid etc.
any one brand that would be best for quality and direct fit ?

Thanks

I would avoid a remainfactored all together,  I used a power master high torque in my 350 and 100 percent happy with it. Looks like an original starter.  Got it from summit it's a new starter not remain. Around $150.00

I've had good luck with NAPA starters. Lifetime warranty on the new and reman units.

Hi Pat,

Montelishi came with one of those high torque "mini" starters, for clearance purposes around the headers.

Works great for me.

Just a quick question...... When you say all you get is the solenoid engagement, did you check the amperage of the battery ?

I only ask because when mine went, I thought it was the starter going as it was doing the same thing.

Had the starter bench tested and it was fine, just not getting enough power from the dying battery.

I'm using a 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe starter on my new 427 BBC, which turns this motor over very easy.

A number of years ago my car wouldn’t start and I figured it was my 21 year old starter. I replaced the starter but didn’t fix the problem. I tested if I was getting power to the starter, etc and it seemed fine. It turns out that although my battery cables looked good the positive cable wasn’t carrying what the starter needed (likely corroded inside the cable). The way I tested for this is I checked if I had 12 volts to the starter then have someone try to start it while testing the voltage. In my case the voltage went to zero when they turned the key so that told me the positive cable needed replacing. I replaced the cable and all was good.

Is this a MINI STARTER.  I remember someone speaking about a mini high torque starter from a newer vehicle. I just don't remember what it was from or where I read it

Yes this is. I believe I read it in a Chevelle Forum ,talking about different starters that will work on Chevrolet motors. It's half the size and is very well built as for the starter head. Uses the same starter bolts. Rock Auto (like $98 ?) I bought the o.e.m. replacement I think. I used the 1997 Chevy Tahoe style.

If you have the original starter why not have it rebuilt at a local shop . It's not expensive and will last another 50 years.

I remember when I had to hit the starter mtr with a hammer then it would start. Turns out the brushes were worn out, so I had them replaced. Years later I did have it rebuilt and as of last week, it still cranks. (I hope I didn't just jinks it) I am a stock kind of person, don't care for aftermarket stuff.
