Shyster7
I recently picked up a bone stock 71 Monte that is in need of some basic maintenance. She has a three on the tree and I'm planning to put a new clutch. The seals are leaking so would like to also replace them, but I am having a hard time determining what I need. Does anyone know what the model of transmission these came with and how I could determine what seals I would need for the job?
cny first gen 71
Depends on where it's leaking what seals you will need. I believe there is a number or tag on trans somewhere hopefully someone with a little better knowledge will chime in on this. That is a kinda rare find not to many out there.
Dtret
I’m thinking it’s a Saginaw.
Shyster7
Thanks guys! Ill take a closer look and see if I can pull some numbers to confirm. Looks like most of the leak is at the tailshaft for the yolk.
cny first gen 71
Tail shaft seal is an easy one to do.
Scott S.
If it's a Saginaw..... I'm thinking M20...... The model number should be stamped in the case at the front end transmission.
Scott S.
Could also be a Muncie..... I guess it may depend on where it was built.
420ponies
If it's cast iron, 3 spd . should have a tag on the side cover. Rear seal is easy fix. Great find! We Need pictures Please!
Shyster7
Thanks again everyone. When I'm back at my dad's hobby shop I'll see if I can find a number stamped or tag. Ill also get some more pictures. The plan is to do some maintenance and make it a good driver again. Ordered new seat covers and a front end rebuild kit. Everything appears to be original so every bushing and joint is roached. I got a receipt from 1985 when the original engine was rebuilt and a new paint job was done. Both are pretty tired now. Previous owner also had the original hub caps that he gave me. Driving a manual on the column is a different experience

Rob Peters
Sweet looking Monte. You should be proud to own it. Being a 3 on the tree is very special and rare. I would hang on to it for a long time. When I was a kid there was a navy guy who used to come to visit my sister. He drove an old 3 on the tree Mercury. It was funny it was months riding with him before I realized it was a manual transmission because it shifted so smoothly it felt like an automatic. I would have been sitting in the back seat so I didn't notice him shifting. I picture a Monte being a similar ride experience. rob
Chevy Dave
I don't know which transmission you have, but an M20 is a wide ratio Muncie 4 speed.

Canuck
Welcome! Great looking 71 Monte! Here's info on how to decode the transmission. https://www.firstgenmc.com/forums/index.php?/resources/decodingtransmission/ My understanding is that they are Muncie 3-speed manuals. We would love to see you and your Monte Carlo at the FGMCC Western Meet next year.
