Excuse my ignorance, but what is that silver thing behind the rear seat of my car?  It looks like maybe duct work for a rear defrost.  Is that what it is?

The top has a cap that looks pinched on a couple of sides like it could be removed for something.

The rear defroster is an option but silver tube is a breather for the fuel system,

There was a rear defogger that was an option. It was a fan that blew air at the rear window. Don’t expect it to defrost anything as it is just cold air.

That canister is  part of the fuel system. I believe it collects fuel vapours.

Did all of these cars have that canister?  I've had the back seat out of my '70 a dozen times and I don't remember it.

Only California cars in 70, all in 71 and 72.  Don't know if all in 70 or started sometime during the year.

I checked my body codes and my two Astro Blue 1970 Monte's are from the Flint plant.  The Cottonwood Green one is from the California plant.

My 70 SS Flint car does not have it.

Neither does mine..... But I think Canadian '70's did.

Different emission laws at various plants.

The rear defrost was a vent and fan assembly in the trunk that fed to what looks like a floor vent on the package tray.

All plants had to comply with fed standards. No exceptions.
The gm rule was that ALL build sheets should be destroyed but the Flint plant was the only one that fully complied as best as we can tell.

Gm actually called it a defogger because they knew it wouldn’t defrost. lol.

Does it have the grill on the interior side of the package tray? You have to read the response really well it’s not clear but once reading closely it is correct. I almost responded as you did.

My 70 does not, built in California,  sold in Arizona.   It doesn't appear to have been removed.. Does anyone know if dealer location made a difference?

It was an option to be ordered. Anyone could order it. But not as prevalent in the warmer states.

The fuel vapour canister system for 1970 would only be for cars sold from California dealers.

Thanks for all the info from everyone.  Really interesting facts when you get down in the weeds on these cars!

I replaced the gas tank on this car and it had all those extra lines going to that separator ASM unit.

So that's why Flint cars don't have build sheets....
